Ross Valory of Journey. What is that effect he used?

on songs like Stone in Love, Don't Stop Believin', etc. It's very distinctive. I thought it was just a chorus pedal going on, but it's more "complex" sounding than that.

Anyone know how to re-create that tone approximately?

Not sure what effects he was using-
But his distinct tones were also achieved by his eclectic
choice of basses (Ovation Magnums, Peavey T-40's &
Steinbergers)

The Ovation Magnum pretty much has that sound built into it.

I think he's just Musicman straight into Ampeg SVT-4 PRO nowadays. But, yeah, you could hear a bit of chorus on Don't Stop Believin.

Does anyone know what effects he's using on "What It Takes To Win"? I just love his tone on that song.

he used his bridge pick up and rolled off the tone about 3/4 the way off.

It almost sounds fretless. he also probably adjusted the mids on his amp. Escape is a blend of direct and mic'd amp / room mic..

Also position your right hand back by the bridge. You'll get more mid range.

[go fretless]

Its almost synth like if I remember it correctly, but its mostly likly a chorus with a bit of upper mids coming out...
