Rounding out the board: Need some help!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've never really needed effects pedals because all of my gigs have been Praise and Worship and the tone of my bass fit things well. But, I've started a new rock trio and some of our covers could use some different sounds. I want 3 or 4 pedals max! Really leaning towards 3. Everytime I've tried to build a board I end up going overboard and spending way too much money on effects that I don't need. I basically want the essentials.

I've already got a tuner and distortion/fuzz pedal and I'm pretty stoked about those.

I've always thought I needed a bass chorus, but I'm not sure. Also delay might be useful?

Any thoughts/recommendations for me?

Compressor, maybe.
For Rock, you'd be set with that...
And a heavy pick.

Also, chorus can add nice dimension to your sound. Octaver ? If you're in a trio, could be useful.

As for delay, I play in a similar format and ended up giving my Memory Toy to my guitar player. Since he doesn't use it that much either, I'm afraid he'll want to give it back...

As for other effects (filters, reverb and wah-t-nots), its always a matter of personal preference. But if you want to keep it to 3 pedals, those should do.

If you only want three or four pedals, I recommend one for a heavy tone, one for a spacey tone, and one for a funk tone.

You already have your fuzz/distortion, you have your heavy rock tone.

I'd get a delay or some sort of modulation for your spacey tone. (try mxr carbon copy, affordable and simple)

And to round it out, get an envelope filter for a funk tone. (again, check out the mxr family of pedals, I use the m82 filter)

The advantage to these are you can get even more tones by having two on at the same time, a lot of different possibilities through pedal combinations.

Good luck, be careful, I predict pedal GAS in your future...

Sansamp Tech21 DI. Every bass player should have one IMO.
