Is there like a rule of thumb with sound, i.e a sortov recommended or generally accepted use of tones for certain things like slap over something else? If so what is it.

play what you think sounds good,...

just be wary that some audiences may not appreciate high feedback distorted stuff whilst others might want you to play that part again they love that stuff so much,....

there's a few things that have gone down as becoming widely accepted,... chorus on a fretless, OD on bass seems just about everywhere in rock,... but so long as it sounds good you could pretty much chuck any effect on anything,...

I have heard slap and delay sound good if you specifically wanted slap stuff? I'm not very good at slap though and don't overly like it (probably because I'm not good at it!)

distortion + wah is always rocking

Is this a general tone question or an actual effects question?

Not sure what you're trying to ask here....
