Rusty Box: Clips in the Key of Self Indulgence

Sign in to disble this ad
I recorded a smidgen of clippage to demonstrate what the Boost does to the sound, and to show off a little of the versatility of this box. All clips were recorded with my P Bass Jr. into the Rusty Box and then into Garage Band, and the only processing of the bass signal is a little rolling off of lows and highs post-Rusty Box to emulate a cabinet somewhat.

Clip one was played with a pick, with the Rusty Box set as such: Treble 9:00, Bass 2:30, Mids 5:00, Gain 12:00, switch set to Hi, Boost off.

Clip two was played with a pick, with the Rusty Box set as such: Treble 9:00, Bass 2:30, Mids 5:00, Gain 12:00, switch set to Hi, Boost on. Here it is with no drums, so you can hear how low the noise floor is at this setting.

Clip three was played with fingers, with the Rusty Box set as such: Treble 7:00, Bass 5:00, Mids 11:00, Gain 10:00, switch set to Lo, Boost off. Here it is with no vocal.

Clip four was played with fingers, with the Rusty Box set as such: Treble 7:00, Bass 5:00, Mids 11:00, Gain 10:00, switch set to Lo, Boost on.

Clip five is the Tri Pie (Gain at unity, Fuzz at 9:00, Tone at 12:00, Blend at 65 wet/35 dry) into the Rusty Box (Treble 9:00, Bass 2:30, Mids 5:00, Gain 12:00, switch set to Hi, Boost off). Here comes the fuzz. This clip gives a walkthrough of the Tri Pie 70' into the Rusty Box, and here are those settings without me yammering on. This was all played with a pick.

Clip six is the same settings as Clip four, but played with a pick (as requested by PunkRocker33133).

I can't get any of the clips to work

EDIT: fixed it! Is there any possibility of one with the low boost on, played with a pick and the gain up?

Not quite sure I follow: are you asking for a clip using the settings on clip 4, but played with a pick?

Well, I didn't use any sort of noise gate on the bass, and I had the gain up, so you can hear that there isn't much noise at my settings. It's certainly quieter than a lot of pedals I've tried. Here is clip 2 with no drums so you can hear how quiet it is at that setting.

I've heard the term "warm" used for a lot of tone descriptions but I think Clip 3 epitomizes the term. Do want.

Edit: Damn you Smurf, a nail in the coffin that was....

Clip 3 sounds wicked good.

I'm not big on distortion, but the other clips sound really nice too.

pretty much exactly that!
Also, I see that you're selling a Ghost Echo, did you like it before you decided to sell it? I've been debating one for a while now, and I can't find any decent reviews on bass

I'll record one like that soon, then.

Also, yes, the Ghost Echo works fine on bass, and sounds great--I was just more than a little presumptuous in thinking I would actually get much use out of a reverb. It's very "ampy" in its character, and can double as a slap-back thanks to the Attack knob.

Those sound very nice. 3 & 4 are right up my ally but I enjoyed Wavy Gravy as well.

I put up a no vocals version of clip 3 (comfy) to better showcase the warmth at those settings. I know the vocals all sound pretty bad--I don't have a mic at my disposal right now other than the one built into my laptop. But, it was a quick and easy way to add density to the mixes (and they amused me). I'll get to PunkRocker's request soon, and possibly one with fuzz into the Rusty Box as well, to show how good that sounds, too.
