Sanford Bluebeard or Wren Pickle Pie (fuzz)?

Sign in to disble this ad
Yes, I've done the pre-required searches!

Honestly, thats actually the best part!

So, I'm looking to add a fuzz and I've pretty much come down to the Sanford and Sunny Bluebeard or the Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie.
They both seem damn sexy!

Anybody have any thoughts on this matter. How do these two pedals differ from each other? Which one does more, less, more flexible? etc...? I'll also be using these on an active bass. I know the Wren and Cuff has a mod for active basses, but any word on how the Bluebeard works with active basses? What is the Bluebeard like (sonic qualities)?

Thanks!

EDIT: More searching turned up the clips for the Wren and Cuff on a bass; Brutal! ( http://wrenandcuff.com/pickled_bass.html) It seems like I need to find some on the Bluebeard now.
And yes I know about Mastodon.

From what I know from Toasted's and Nickman's experience the Bluebeard is fine with active basses

No promises, but tomorrow night at our band practice, I'll see if I can get a recording of my bluebeard. Sorry - I don't have an active bass to run through, although I have run passive > Sansamp BDDI > Bluebeard and it sounded fine.

The band Baroness seems to have an easier "hear the bass fuzz" mix than Mastadon, but that may just be me.

If you don't see me repost on Wednesday, PM me to remind me or see if I dropped the ball.

I only had a brief experience with the Mastodon but my opinion was that it wasn't gated enough for my tastes; lots of play inbetween notes.

If you have specific questions regarding active bass etc, you can just email me. I've never heard the Bluebeard though, so I can't say how they compare. Going by what I've read here though, it's probably safe to say my Pickle and the Bluebeard are both good solid pedals.

take care! email if you'd like.

Awesome. I actually emailed you last night and just received your reply. Thanks for the info.

So it doesn't seem like the active issue is an issue at all with either pedal. Maybe I'll have to do a search again to find more out about the Bluebeard's tonality. I also think the Pickle has a smaller footprint.

We're still learning how to record with our questionable setup, but check out the recording of "Cortez the Killer." There are four solo breaks - fretless bass through Bluebeard is heard in #2 and #4. I have the tone knob turned all the way down, and the distortion knob at about 12 o'clock. Not the most varied sample, but still easier to make out than through the mix on a Mastodon album.

Pardon my intonation in solo break #4.
