correct me if I'm wrong but i think an overdrive pedal stresses the tubes (Ampeg SVT-VR in my case) which creates distortion; the distortion is actually created within the amp.

and i think a distortion pedal creates distortion inside the pedal.

Ah OK. Some overdrive pedals are intended for boosting the input of a tube amp, but the majority of them are intended to emulate an overdriven tube amp by themselves. The Sansamp is the second kind, it distorts internally.
