SansAmp BDDI - Clipping My Amp

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I am using an Ampeg 7Pro, Ampeg PN210HLF & PN115HLF cab combination with my BDDI & Fender Jazz. The BDDI is clipping my amp with the footswitch engaged & when it's not engaged. Here are my settings:
Level-11:00
Blend-5:00 (full On)
Treble-12:00
Bass 12:00
Drive 12:00
Presence-12:00

I mainly have the boost on my jazz(S1-Switching) on (eventhough it still clips with the bass boost off). Everything on the amp is flat.

1/4 Output is Line
XLR Output is Line

I've cut back the level, cut the bass, Blend & Drive, gain on the amp & it still clips.

Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

Set your 1/4" output (effected) to "instrument", not "line" level. Line level is intended for driving a slave power amp and may be too hot for the Ampeg's preamp section. Worth a try.

That just has to be it. Leave it Instrument level for sure, and try different settings now.

You do have this in front of the amp and not in the FX loop, correct? Good.

Engaging the -15 dB pad will give you more room to play around with the BDDI settings and the Ampeg's gain control.

Also those drive and level settings are very hot for running into a preamp, even with line/inst set to inst. Right now have Jazz preamp -> BDDI preamp -> Ampeg preamp -> Ampeg power amp. That's simply too much gain before the Ampeg's power amp section. So, here is what I would do.

1. Run your instrument into the amp without the BDDI, and set everything to get a reasonably good sound. Run a somewhat high master setting, and a correspondingly low gain setting to compensate.

2. With the Ampeg off, connect the BDDI with the tone settings you mentioned above, but with blend at noon, and level and drive at minimum, and hit the footswitch to get the red LED. Power up the Ampeg.

3. Slowly raise the BDDI level until you hear the same volume you got without the BDDI. If you hear clipping, roll back the instrument's volume so you can bring up the level on the BDDI to a workable range, say, 9 o'clock or slightly above. Leave the amp gain and master settings from step 1 where they are; don't lower them. Do all your work at the instrument and at the BDDI.

4. Now add some drive to taste, realizing of course that you'll have to drop the level control accordingly.

Hopefully that'll work for you, or at least get you in a better spot than before.

Lots of good advice. Remember that the sample settings in our manuals are all done direct to board and with vintage Fender bass guitars with low output passive pickups. If you have the blend up full start with very low drive settings and gradually increase. The gain and distortion characteristics will change with your playing. Keep that in mind if you're an aggressive player.

Many times people setup the pedal when they are playing quietly and then dig in on the gig and feel there is too much distortion.
