Sansamp BDDI problem with flatwounds

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there!
I have big problem with my basses and sansamp.
Factory presets with small adjustments fits perfect - SVT style with lil more drive and lil less presence is my favorite.

BUT I can't find any preset that would sound good with flatwoudns.

I've tried all my basses, I have Thomastik Infeld Flats, they are super smooth and warm with my B-200R Ampeg combo, but every sansamp preset sounds harsh, and so hard.

All smooth flatwound bliss is gone, there are tons of lows, big drop on mids, absolutelly no highs and huge peak of plucking the strings sound - something like playing with a metal pick, super-upper high "click" and sometimes "clack" of string hitting the fret.

Looks something like this:

Do you have the same problem?
Do you have any reasonable presets or advices?

You could try reducing the blend knob and let more of your direct signal in. That might reduce the perceived mid cut.

I am very disappointed, I've tried to adjust my amp EQ to add the missing frequencies - looks like they are totally missing, because there's almost no response when adding/cutting mids and highs ( beside harsh attack sound getting more harsh )

Reducing blend knob is not an option - still there's way better sound when sansamp is off.

Played my heavily modded fretless SX jazz with flats through my BDDI last week and it sounded fantastic. Granted, I've equipped that bass with Dimarzios and the mids really come through nicely, but I absolutely loved the tone I got.

I ran it with flat EQ, presence straight up, drive at about 10:00 and blend at about 10:00. No complaints at all. I should be getting a recording of it soon, so I might post for comparison.

My other fretless also has flats and it's equipped with bartolini pickups and an Aggie OBP-1 and it sounds great through the BDDI as well.

Note that I am very particular about my mids - I ALWAYS want midrange presence and I absolutely detest a scooped tone.

It should be an option. The processing on that sucker is going to eat your mids with roundwounds. Since flat have a little more fundamental and less mids, it stands to reason that the SABDDI is not going to fare well with the blend up on a flat wound bass.

I've been running TI Flats Pbass into a BDDI for years and never had a problem with mids. Try keep your blend at 12 o'clock or less. You could try turning the mids up on your amp.

Use the bassman setting more as an example than the SVT. Then turn the bass and the treble all the way down. You get more mids back that way.

I play both a jazz and a P bass with flats through a BDDI all the time. Today 2 people that had never heard me play before both complimented me on the tone.

To each their own I guess.

Yeah it does sound OK. I'd say it sounds quite well.
BUT I still can get WAY better sound without Sansamp and with EQ flat on my ampeg. It's weird, cause B-200R is nothing very special - I would not be astonished If I were using SVT CL or VR.
I'd love to have thomasticks back on my main bass, BUT sansamp with roundwounds sounds soooo stunning
