Sansamp Pedals: What's the Differences?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I have an RBI, that I have been using to record DI with. Well, we are leaving the studio and playing out. I bought a Genz Benz shuttle 9.0 and a GK410, thinking I would get the Sansamp fake tube tone out of a real tube, well semi-tube amp, but alas, I love the sansamp tone. So, I need a pedal to get it, and I don't know the difference between them all. I really just need a mids front kind of sound, and I'd prefer not to send the dough to get a DI when I already have one. Just need the tone for a live application.

My soundclick page has various samples of a few Tech 21 pedals, but they are all direct. It includes the Tri-A.C., PSA-1, Leeds, and the Oxford.

A few are in the mix of a song as well. Let me know if that would be of any help(maybe/maybe not?)

My vote is for the VT Bass. Its a pedal I never turn off. I like it better than the BDDI as the tone is just a smidge less brash/coloured/in your face.

Maybe check out some youtube clips?

^^ I really don't' feel a lot of the YT clips are too helpful, especially on the VT bass.

That pedal can sound much better than that, as do a LOT of their character series. I think Tech 21 made a huge leap with the new stuff.

I'm in love with my Oxford pedal right now, and it beat out a LOT of other pedals to stay here. Funny thing, is when I first got it, I recorded a few clips with it, and never realized the speakersim was turned off. It still sounded good, albeit a bit more "raw". My "heavy grind" clip is with the sim turned off:

Thanks for the replys guys, but I agree that youtube doesn't help me all that much with tone questions about pedals/amps , b/c the audio is so terrible. I guess that I'm just asking what's the cheapest sansamp pedal that will get close to my RBI.

Yep. What he said. If you just want a single always on tone the bddi is the way to go, and used will save you some dough.

Ive had in order, BDDI, RBI, VT, BDDI again and now VT deluxe. I think the BDDI is closer to the RBI soundwise depending on settings. I still haven;t been able to dail in the VT as well as the BDDI or RBI. I can get close and that's why I still have both the VT & BDDI. I will always have a BDDI even if I go with the VT all the time. Makes a nice back-up to keep in the case. So that would be where I would start.

I generally agree. However, I can easily hear the difference b/n the two in this clip:

The BDDI is closest to the RBI. But I think in the end, the VT sounds more defined and has better control over the low end and the harshness (is this a word?) in the high end

I recently had both the VT and the BDDI. Both are great on their own, but when A/B'd, I thought the VT had a more focused punch, and all around better tone. The BDDI just lacks something in my opinion...Its a good usable tone, just missing something.
