Sansamp Tri-AC and DI Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry for another Sansamp thread, I did try searching but couldn't find what I was looking for.

1. Does anyone have any experience with the Tri-AC for bass? Similar to the bass one? Better/worse?

2. I am in the process of putting all my gear in a rack and was interested in getting a compressor/gate. If I buy a Sansamp stomp box that would mean the signal would go Bass -> Effects -> Sansamp (on floor) -> Compressor (in rack) -> Sound guy/my amp. Basically what I am asking is if the output from the compressor would be adequate to use as a DI to the mixing board/PA. And if not why? Is there anything special about the Sansamp/Other DI Boxes that make them suitable for this like signal strength or impedance or something I have no idea about?

Thanks

One big issue is balanced versus unbalanced connections. If part of your chain converts your signal from unbalanced to balanced, and if you use only balanced connections from that point on in the entire rest of your chain, then you can send that signal to the PA. If none of your devices converts from unbalanced to balanced, or if you go back to unbalanced connections later in the chain, then that output is not suitable for sending to the PA.

The reason is noise reduction. Regular instrument cables (which are unbalanced) pick up more noise the longer they are, and if you send an unbalanced signal into an XLR cable it is still unbalanced and will still pick up noise. Balanced connections cancel out any ambient EMF noise that the cable would have picked up.

As far as impedance is concerned, you should not have a problem. Most pedals and rack processors have a low enough output impedance that you will have a good impedance relationship with the PA inputs, and minimal loss over the length of the cable.

OK so if i went XLR (which I assume is balanced) out of the Sansamp, into the compressor then XLR out to the sound desk that would be fine?

Edit: You seem to be the compressor expert, have you tried the PreSonus ACP-22?

All the compressors I have tried are on my reviews page. I haven't done that one yet.

The Sansamp XLR output is balanced. As long as the input and output of the compressor are balanced, then yes that would work great going to the desk.

TriAC doesn't have a balanced out, though. Unless they upgraded since the one I have.
