Sansamp VT Bass settings??

Sign in to disble this ad
so i got this vt bass last night and jammed with my band...

i tried to copy the settings on the paper but it doesn't have enough grit IMO
I maxed the character and increase the drive knob to 2oclock and it gave me a distorted sound i like.. the bad thing there is i lost the bottom..

hope some owners can share their settings in terms of the following:

a) clean but with some grit
b) a little more aggressive sound with bottom
c) Overdrive sound with bottom

I'm a noob when it comes to these pedals so pardon my ignorance with these things...

Thanks

You can just crank the bass control, but my preference is to blend my VT signal with a clean signal through my Boss LS-2.

When I crank the character knob I turn my bass' tone all the way down.
Go from there.

@madmatt - wat do u mean you turn your bass' tone all the way down??

anyway, I have an Aria AVB 100 bass guitar -- it has active electronics installed

for the overdrive effect -- how much character do you add?

I'm personally greatly diappointed in the VT pedal. I got one after reading so much about it on here and spent a lot of time with it but just never got a sound I liked out of it.
Guess it's not for everyone. Really need to get rid of it instead of letting it gather dust.

I think I go for a similar sound in my rig, maybe alittle cleaner but with some extra bite added by the VT.

On my active Ibanez ATK, with the bass EQ flat, I put drive at 9:00, character around 2:00, lows and mids slightly bumped to 1:00 and highs rolled to 11:00. Level set to just above unity volume.

I was slightly surprised though, because before I got the VT Id play my ATK with all the pre-amp knobs maxed out. That sounds like overloaded crap through the VT so I leave the EQ flat now.

I kinda want to take back that last post though, because it makes me realize that for any bass I plug in, I change the Character and Drive settings on the VT. Really the best way to find out what sounds good is to turn up your amp to a decent volume and play around with the Character and Drive knobs. I always turn the Level up when I turn Drive down and vice versa too.

Start with all of the knobs at 11:00 and play with settings between 11 and 1. That's where I find the best tones in the VT bass.

I just do the "SVT" settings, but turn the Character knob to 10:00ish. Depending on which bass I'm using I might turn the Drive to noon.

Clean, with a little grind. Midrangey yet with a nice bottom end. It's all a matter of taste. your amp will have a lot to do with the subtleties too.

For recording, I'll start with the "SVT" settings but will usually mess with the settings more to fit in the mix. Here's a recording with a Ric 4003, VT direct. "SVT" settings with Character knob at noon.

"Wild and Blue" rough mix

Here's a link to the pdf (its buried in that vt bass database thread).

http://www.ajbrown.us/bass/VTBassPad.pdf

From that, what was posted here and everywhere else on talkbass you should be able to find that ampeg tone you're looking for.

I just started experimenting with bi-amping with my GB Shuttlemax. I put the VT Bass through one of the channel's effects loop and kept the other one clean. The clean channel is EQ'd to be super beefy, lots of low-mids, and the pedal's settings are brittle and fuzzy, but combined, you can get a Chris Wolstenholme-style tone: fuzz with clear definition.

that got me curious, it would be great if you can post soundclips
and a pic of your vt settings too and pedal arrangement

thanks

Think of the midrange control and the character control as being in opposition. When you increase the character, you need to decrease the midrange, and vice versa. Once I figured that out, I could get the VT Bass to sound a lot better.

thanks for coming up with a soundclip with a band.. this actually is more helpful than the bass on its own...let's u hear it will sound in band mix..

great soundclip..how do i download that?

i like the mix on ur bass, but if i want to add a little more distortion/grit which one should i add?? -- character or drive??

Drive gives you more distortion and character adds bite. Play around and find what works for you.
