Sansamp w/ a tube head. Redundant?

Do you think it's over kill to get a Sansamp to use with my Fender Bassman 300? The Sansamp is meant to emulate a tube amp right?

I know that Geddy uses a Sansamp with a tube head. It sounds good to me.

Yes, Sansamp products are generally designed to emulate the character of a tube amp. However, there is no reason that you couldn't use on in front of your Bassman if you like the sound you get. You will likely be able get sounds that you might not be able to get out of your amp by itself. A Sansamp could also be used as an effect - a radical change in tone (i.e. heavy overdrive) for certain songs or passages. Some people like the sound of a Sansamp, some do not. Only you can decide whether it fits your needs.

I use a Valve Drive into an all tube amp. Not redundant, just extra ass kick.

The Sansamp could also be a better-quality DI than what's onboard the Bassman.
Like all good gear heads, I tend to study what the big guys use, & it seems like most pros run one of these, or at least have one in the gig bag. I don't; maybe that's why I'm on TB 23 hours a day.
