Sansamps and compression, anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Apparently, Andrew Barta (founder of Tech21) is not fond of outboard compression. Nor is he a big fan of noisegates...

So without further ado, does anyone here but me use a BDDI or VT with an additional compressor and/or noisegate? Eventhough the BDDI has the DI-option, I put it in front of an EBS Multicomp to keep the dynamics of the Bass Driver, yet keeping the levels consistent. It also gives me more attack and punch, helping me cut through better. Then at the end of the chain is an ISP Noise Decimator because the BDDI can get a bit noisy.

I run a multicomp before the BDDI, but I like to run the BDDI last or 2nd to last in my chain for a number of reasons.

I use a T21 Leeds with a compressor (Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone). The compressor isn't always on, but occasionally is at the same time as the Leeds. I dig it.

I run a BBE comp before my BDDI (last in chain). What settings (BDDI or VT) are you using?

I use a RBI in my studio w/ a distressor after it. Live, I use a BDDI w/ no comp.

YES, YES and YES!

Compression: never leave the house without it...

... but in all seriousness and in relation to your question... I use compression before and after my Tech 21 VT Bass... It's just a matter of finding a 'quiet' compressor...

Hope this helps...

I use a BBE Opto Stomp in front of my VT Bass pedal with every bass except my Ric. Sounds great!

Hi-fi into an old tube amp

I try to dial in just the right gain structure (tube head ideal, doing the same thing on my M-Pulse now which is pretty tubey too), among other things, so that a compression effect happens kind of naturally. I havent used compression on my live setup in years. I go for all the punch I can get.

I've never really had any noise issues with my BDDI.

Using too much drive on Sansamp BDDI will compress you sound, making unnecessary the use of another compressor.

I have my compressor in the effects loop and the PBDDI on my pedal board, so it's before the compressor. I use the SansAmp as an effect, nothing more.

If you use compression properly, you don't need to worry about punch.

I just put an OBP-3 into an 18v bass, so it has stupid amounts of boost. With my VT cranked though, the inbuilt compression means there's almost no increase in volume, just changes to the tone. My Milkbox becomes irrelevant for controlling levels.

Interesting that most of you prefer to have the compressor before the Sansamp...

The BDDI is set with a 50/50 blend, slightly cut treble, slightly boosted bass, drive a bit past noon and full presence. This way it only growls when I dig in hard and the Multicomp makes sure that the levels are consistent by boosting less audible signals and reducing harsh peaks coming from the BDDI... hence compressing.

"Well, there's your problem right there..." - my auto mechanic.

The boosted drive and presence may add extraneous noise but if it sounds good and you're able to tame it to some degree, go for it.
