Question Saul Williams, List of Demands Synth sound

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I've recently been asked to join a hip-hop project and one of the songs iv'e been asked to learn is ''List Of Demands'' by Saul Williams, specificly the main synth line.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1llN...eature=related

Pedal wise I have a Boss OD-3 a Dunlop Bass Wah and a Zoom B2 multi-effects.

I also play a Hofner violin bass.

I was wondering what combination of these effects would get me close to the original synth line.

The Zoom unit has Envelop filter, octave, auto wah, ring mod, flanger, chorus, phaser, delay, reverb, slow attack,pitch shifter(+2/-1)

Thanks a million for any help! I want to get as close as possible so I nail the audition

If that's all I had, I'd go with OD-3, octave, phaser and reverb.

Thanks I'll give that a go and see how it turns out!
I would never have thought of the phaser.

Anymore suggestions are more than welcome

It's subtle, but there. More specifically, go octave -> reverb -> OD-3 -> phaser.

Ah, I would but the octave, reverb and phaser are all in the same unit so I can't put the OD-3 that way in the signal chain. Would it still work if I go

Octave-> Phaser -> Reverb -> OD-3 ?
I have my pedal board in the rehersal room so I won't be able to try this untill the actual audition! This is why I turn to my fellow TBers for help!

You can't run the OD-3 into the multi-effect?

you can

But the phaser, octave and reverb are all part of the Zoom
So I can either

OD-3-->(Octave>Phaser>Reverb)-->Amp
or

(Octave>Phaser>Reverb)-->OD-3--> Amp

Then put the fuzz first.

Depending on what parameters you have control over on the different effects, not to mention what each one sounds like you could get away with using a chorus (high depth, low rate) instead of a phaser, or using a delay for a faux-tremolo effect (which is, along with the fuzz, a big component of the effect).

So fuzz->modulation->tremolo would be the ideal, fuzz->modulation->delay is what I would do, since 'verb on bass can get real muddy real quick. Again, this all depends on what parameters are available for the tweaking

Well I have tremelo on the Zoom which I completely forgot about it also has virbrato
So I would be best going for

Fuzz->Tremolo->Octave ? (due to only being able to activate tremolo or octave the Octave would actualy be a pitch shifter on -12)

Or Fuzz->Octave->Chorus/phaser->Delay

I'm leaning towards the second one but I'm not sure..
Thanks

Depending on the tones you can get out of your bass, I'd go with just Fuzz->Tremolo, but if that's not as deep as you need, try adding in the pitch shifter too.

Don't worry about it... I love "how do I get that tone" questions, both answering and asking them.

Good luck on the audition, and thanks for turning me on to that song: its pretty killer.
