In search of an Akai DI tone.

If you know anything about me, the link I'm about to post is sadly predictable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0fELeOpenE&fmt=18

Before you react in a similar manner to " Search.", you should know that I am not looking for a fuzz or distortion recommendation, but a pedal below $200 that can cop THAT overlaying synth tone the Akai is producing, track well, and be no bigger than about twice the size of a Boss compact unit.

Also, I am aware that on the original track, Matt does put a real synth over it, but that synth is not present in the Instrumental above. Listen to it and the song, and you can distinguish the synth itself immediately.

Off-hand, the Ibanez SB7 catches my attention. Any others?

Excuse my ignorance but are you looking for a synth pedal, I didn't quite understand your OP. Sorry...

It doesn't have to be a synth, I just want it to sound akin to that setting. The SB7, for instance, is not a synth, so much as it is a distorto-filter, and yet to my ears (from TaySte's clips), it sounds more in the ballpark than many marketed "synths" below $200.

I can get fairly close to that with my TZ-2 before my Line 6 otto filter in twin pass mode with the sensitivity turned all the way down. The octave up of the TZ-2 really adds that extra synthy quality to the overall tone.

I've got the fuzz covered. I'm interested in learning more about the Otto filter, however. I hadn't heard of it before.

This is it?

That's the one. Do you want some clips of the 3 different settings?

I heard the clips on the site just now, and I'm mildly interested, I must say. Do you have the means to make clips? If so, I would love you to, TZ-2 (or any other pedals which you think contribute) included please.

ZVEX Wooly Mammoth nails that sound better than anything else I've tried. I had a clone but just sold it because it's not a sound I tend to find myself using very much!

Really? I find it hard to believe that it was able to nail the filtering resonance heard in the clip, but interesting nonetheless.

It won't...I'm sure danny forgot that part

Here's my attempt with a little combo of my own...Not sure if I'd use this live or just use fuzz alone.

The filter is centered too far down into the low mids. Needs to be centered higher, and have a snappier attack. Clean blend with fuzz outside would also help.

Keep working on it.

Yes, I know the flaws and the blend would help but it's something I would need to set up for that one song...not worth the board space. Even with that setup, I loose my fuzz in the 3Leaf's efx loop so I'm not sure what I will do right now..

Ok so my sloppy attempt at Hysteria along with the TZ-2's ring mod don't mix at all well. I think I'm going to get a new fuzz that's simply a fuzz and nothing else. So, to be honest, the clips are useless. If you want clips of the Otto Filter on its own, let me know. Sorry

It's all good, man. I think I decided against both the SB7 and Otto altogether, because I think I may have found the formula, but I won't be able to report on it until September when I have the money to finally build a faux' real pedalboard.

Sounds pretty good Chronicle. Probably the closest I've heard without actually using a Deep Impact. I bet a Muse cover band would be a lot of fun.

What's the formula? Care to share? I've learnt today that I can't get the Hysteria tone.

There has actually only been one time I've ever heard even Chris himself nail the tone live, and that was in this performance.

It astounds me to no end that such a commonly sought-after tone seems to be beyond reach, even for the man himself.
