Seeking advice/opinions on Fuzz

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Big Muff Pi Bass pedal, and I actually like it for the most part. I am just looking for something better. Something that cuts through the mix a bit more.

I am seriously considering the Grey Stache or the Momster.

My question is how much of a difference is there between what I have and the two that I have listed?

I know that they get alot of love here, and it is probably for good reason. I just thought I'd ask.

Also, I had a Blowtorch that I hated... so I am looking for the fuzz type now.

The Grey Stache or Momster will definitely cut better than a stock Bass Big Muff Pi.

The reason is that the grey stache and momster feature a mids control so you can either scoop the mids like a stock big muff does or boost the mids. Mids are important for being heard in a mix with other distorted guitars so any distortion pedal that helps you preserve the mid frequencies will help you cut better than a stock muff.

Some other muff-like fuzz clones that get love on these forums are the Wren And Cuff Pickle Pie B, Blackout Effectors Musket, and Earthbound Audio Supercollider.

Out of the ones that you noted, which would you recommend? Or will any of them really be fine for me?

I'm not a fuzz aficionado but I'll chime in with my limited experience...
I had a GGG Big Muff clone that had a 4 position mids switch for scooped, flat, humped, and tone bypass. The tone bypass was awesome! I felt it really open up the muff and made it feel more natural, present, and dynamic. I'm sure it would cut through a band mix better.

If you want cutting, it might be time to look at something else other than Big Muff variants. Even with all the mids-doohickeys and blend what-nots, it's a design that tends to sound better when solo'd or combined with other pedals. The 'thickness' that makes it so appealing can just turn a mess w/the live band.

Step away from the muffs and try something with a knife-edge to it like the Wounded Paw Attack Goat, or a Malekko B:assmaster

The Oxide is another knife-edge fuzz machine.

if you're set on a muff, get a grey stache or a musket. mids for days and both are built by awesome dudes. if you want to look elsewhere, my latest favorite is the smallsound/bigsound team awesome fuzz machine. cuts through like a knife and isn't based on a muff, and also built by an awesome dude.

The TAFM or the 4545 are next on my list.

I have the Supercollider and I love how thick and aggressive it is, but that's about all it does. Luckily my bass is the most distorted tone in my trio. Guitarist runs pretty clean.
