Seeking horrible distortion

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Boss DS-1 in one side of my parallel FX setup. It sounds horrible, but in a good way. It is gnarly and nasty. I'm looking for something similar but better to replace it. I'm thinking DS-1/Rat/Animato sounds, but without the Animato budget. Less bass loss than the DS-1 is highly desirable. Fun oscillations and other extra features are not essential, but will not be frowned upon.

Not quite sure what an animato sounds like, but I'm having a lot of fun making horrible noise running a MT-2 into a Paradriver. All that midrange control really let's me dial in the nasty, and no bass loss.

A rat or clone can feedback and get nasty at higher gain settings.

A Devi pedal could do oscillations on a lower budget.

Why not a grey stache plus( one in the classifieds) or a momster. That thing is pretty wicked.

Might I suggest a Snarling Dogs Mold Spore? Not really a distortion , but a ring mod controlled by a wah is just wrong. You need to hear it to truly understand this.

Digitech Death Metal. Total loss of low end and hilariously trebley distortion.

edit: nevermind, misread the OP

Not after Muffs or clones. I have a Muff in the other of my parallel channels, and will soon have 2.

So I guess the Swollen Pickle is out? How about a Fulltone OCD, or a ZVEX Box Of Rocks?

The Wampler Triple Wreck would probably suit your needs. very high gain, very thick sounding

how about a rat if you want ratlike sounds? I use a turbo rat and it does lose a bit low end but nothing extreme. Also, if you run it parallel, perhaps you can avoid lowendloss by using a clean blend?

he's too shy to say it (and a prince about abiding by the CUP), but Fuzzrocious has a Rat clone that's crazy good, the Rat Tail. hard to find, but they pop up once in awhile. and word on the street is that in a few months a smaller box (MXR sized) version will be available. check out his website.

good prices too.

Boss Turbo Distortion was the more horrible distortion I've ever used.

I maxed out the inputs on my 4-track recorder, sent it into REALLY bad clipping (driving the VU meter into red just with finger noise) and used the line out into my amp.

Sounded like a square wave synth or ring mod.

If you don't mind multi-effects processors, the rocktron utopia b100 has some nasty sounding distortion channels. personally, I find the distortion channels to be a little rough and metallic sounding. I do have sound samples of the rocktron utopia b100 on my soundclick website. here's the link.

SoundClick artist: Crystalman85 - page with MP3 music downloads

Feel free to check it out.

Check out the Red Witch Fuzz God II. It's perfect for those times I need unhealthy doses of fuzz. At max gain it instantly feedbacks in between notes. There is some bass loss, but not much, and I don't really mind. And you can tune in some pretty fun sounds with the "Wrath of God" mode.

Love that idea, gotta try that. Improvised ghetto distortion ftw!
