Seeking a Tormato-esque envelope filter...

Sign in to disble this ad
As heard throughout this clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn2uP56TjmU

Specifically the whole beginning section. And the stuff that sounds almost like a chorus at 4:44

I am 90% sure Squire used a Mutron at that time, I'm wondering if there are any other available filters to get that tone? Or should I be searching for a Mutron clone?

Thanks.

Very Mutron sounding to me.
FX25 can probably do something pretty close.
Q-tron can probably get you halfway there.

If I were you I'd go for the FX25. Great sounding filter and they are nice and cheap on ebay. Plus they look cool and they are vintage-ish-ey.

I'd do a Mutron clone.

Back in the mid 80's, a band I was in did Future Times and Don't Kill the Whale for which I used the old Ibanez AF-201 which I sold years ago for $20 which now sells for $200-$300

Today, grab the Maxon AF-9. Maxon manufactured the Ibanez AF-201 back in the day.

I thought on Tormato it was an Eventide Harmonizer... could be dead wrong though... one of my favorite Yes albums though totally underrated...

It sounds like he's got some chorus on the whole song, but it's just more noticeable when the filter is off.

IMO the DOD FX25 is not the beast of which you seek. I'm thinking another DOD would serve you better, as in the 440.

That being the case, you might want to check out the Boomstick Bottom Feeder (from ToneFactor.com if you didn't know) which is based on the old DOD 440 but voiced for bass and could get you close that sound.

A Meatball clone (Robot Factory Meatwad, maybe Barge Grinder) is a more versatile, but more expensive idea that I'm sure could dial in that tone.

With enough tweaking I can do that on my Qtron+.

I believe CS did use the Eventide along with an envelope filter for Tormato. In my searching he may have used a Colorsound Dipthonizer for his envelope filter. There were only 30 of these made.

There may be some envelope-controlled filter there, but there's definitely a lot of envelope-controlled Eventide Harmonizer as well. Basically the intensity of the micro-pitch shift is modulated by the level of his attack. So it sort of choruses/flanges on every note, which contributes to that vowel-like auto-wah sound.

Hmm... I'm afraid we must agree to disagree on this point.

Actually, I'd be way more tolerant of Tormato if they'd A) remix it; B) replace all Wakeman's Polymoog parts with something less cheesey sounding; and C) get rid of "Arriving UFO" and "Circus Of Heaven" completely.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I totally agree with this. The album has a dark, almost muddy production. And the songs mentioned are just plain corny!

I still love the hell out of Yes, and find Squire's approach to effects very creative. Sometimes I'm unaware that his bass may have a heavy effect because it's woven into the total sound of the band.

In the liner notes of the album he's credited as playing "harmonized Rickenbacker bass", so there's definitely well, a harmonizer, in there contributing to the sound...

And that's pretty much the only decent song on the album... just about everything else... oh my. :/

IIRC he went stereo with his Ric using the Mutron on one pickup, the Eventide on the other. Either he or Steve Howe said there were lots of EH fx boxes lying around at that time...I think Howe used a Microsynth on "UFO". I also recall reading an interview and CS had never heard of the Dipthong thing when asked about it.
+10 on the remixing idea
+20 on replacing the polymoog (Howe didn't like how it meshed with his guitar sound).
The funny thing is that Jon has said "that's the album where I stayed in the back and let the guys do their thing", but it's also been said he insisted on that 'UFO' and "Circus" be on the album.
I get the vauge feeling that if they used a Roger Dean cover for it, somehow people would like it a bit more-- you can tell just by looking at it it's going to be 'different', and the critics didn't see the humor in the tomatoes.

That's what I remember too... I saw them on the Topographic Oceans tour, and he had the Eventide and a Mutron on top of his amp... and the Brassmaster as well.

Ah, those were the days....

You could probably get reasonably close with a multi-fx unit... compression (with attack/release set fairly fast)+ auto wah +chorus (with rate kinda high)+ a touch of reverb. The middle section sounds pretty much the same but with more reverb/delay.

Well for Topo, it was Moraz playing keys. But I saw a tour after that (Relayer? Its been so long and I saw them quite a few times.. it's all a blur now!) when Wakeman was back, and when his big solo was coming up in Roundabout, he just held one note the entire time and was laughing and talking to his roadie who was kneeling down by his keys... he's the guy that brought him his food. He might have been eating at some point.. who knows! He was acting quite childish. I was watching Squire and Howe myself!
