Is self-ocsilation harmful

Sign in to disble this ad
I got my first delay pedal today and I managed to get some strange sounds out of it and I was wondering how harmful this will be to my amp.

Also what delays do you use for self oscilation??

Dan

At higher volumes, feedback (which is what self-oscillation is, technically) can rip up speakers. Watch your levels.

I turn down the gain somewhere in my signal chain before doing it. No problems.

Am I the only one who has always thought the the term "self oscillation" sounds like like something you do while watching Cinemax late at night.

The feedback from the oscillations on my walking delay makes the attenuator light up like a mofo. I really have to watch my levels b/c I can't afford to blow speakers/attenuators/tweeters/etc. I tend to keep my repeats at about 2:00PM and my delay time on the slower side to keep the oscillation tamed. If I turn the delay time up to simulate a verby sound, I have to roll back the repeats for sure.

Just be sure to put a sock over the gain knob.

Is there any safer way to get self oscillation like a delay without the added chance of insanity to your speakers that a delay will do?

Yes, now stop it or you'll go blind.

Plus it's harder to twiddle knobs with hairy palms.

Compressor with good peak limiting?

If you have a Carbon Copy, you can go into crazy oscillation but control the volume by turning down the mix knob.

A father walks in on his son "doing the deed" and yells "Son, STOP OR YOU'LL GO BLIND!!"

The son says "Dad I'm over here!!!"

I couldn't resist.

I have nearly killed my ears many times using that thing for oscillation. It takes a very quick hand to control it.

Couldn't they make a compressed oscillation pedal that wouldn't get so loud? Or is the point of oscillation to be out of control?

How about a Boss LMB-3 at the end of the chain, and just stomp on it when things get a little crazy? Or maybe even a volume pedal, then you can back it off as you need to.

Yes.. Indeed, that same thought crossed my mind as well.. something a bit pedestrian perhaps.. such as "Girls Gone..Wi....errrr... "Basses Gone Wild" kinda thing late-night-waste-of-time thingie on "Spike" and other channels..

I'm using a delay I only got today, it's a subdecay echobox proto, the way I can get it to S.O is by maximg the time and the repeat knob, the only problem is, if I turn it off and then back on they oscillation is still there, the only way to stop it is to turn the repeats knob all the way down, is this the same with other delays??
