Send distortion ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey there, I've been wondering one thing.

When I'm recording heavy metal bass I've usually been recording a DI signal, and routing it trough the "Studio Devil Virtual Bass Amp" (great plug!)

From that channel I've been doing a send into another channel, that I usually put a guitar amp simulator in, with some heavy distortion, then I mix those two togeather to get a distorted bass sound when I need it (think about the In Flames bass sound) without loosing the bottom and clarity (versus sending the entire signal trough a distortion pedal or something like that) of the bass track.

Now I was thinking, is there any simple unit to do this with an amp ?

I have an Eden-Nemesis NA650 that has both a Pre and Post-EQ effect loop.

Could I use either of those loops for a "send" type distortion ?

I think I have the design of what I want in my head, but not sure if it exicts.

It's a kind of mixer/channel selector, It has a footswitch for the distortion channel, and if the distortion is off the signal is fed straight trough the unit without altering anything.

Now if the distortion is off, the signal is being splitted into a straight trough, and distortion channel, the distortion channel has a level knob (to adjust how loud the distortion is) and some distortion tone modifier. Then after the two channels have been summed togeather I have a knob that lowers the combined output of both channels (since when I have to instances of the same signal it's bound to increase the volume a bit)

Are you understanding what I'm talking about ?

If I had the skill and knowledge I'd probably just design and built the unit myself, but unfortunately I do not

Does something like this exist or can I just keep on dreaming ?

And other thing, would you like to have one ?

There are a bunch of distortion/overdrive pedals that send a wet and dry signal together and a bunch of blending pedals that blend a dry signal with a wet one. First thing I would do is look into what type of distortion you want and go from there.

Bass Big Muff is your answer. You can get a ton of different distortion sounds with it and it sounds like exactly what you are describing.

Ok nice, I'll have to check that out.

Have an old big muff PI somewhere, I'll try using it as an send effect when recording and see if I get what I'm after
