I really like the subtle, smoldering overdrive that I can get from the input stage of my Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0, but turning it on and off while playing live means tweaking knobs until I have the right amount of drive at the right volume. Obviously, this just doesn't happen often between songs.
So I'd love to find an overdrive pedal that will sound as close as possible to the Shuttle's overdrive. I know it's just a 12AX7 with in and out gain knobs, but I'm having a hard time replicating it for a reasonable price. For instance, the EBS ValveDrive looks promising, but I'm trying not to spend quite so much. Any suggestions?
Oh yeah, before we get too far into this, I do have a BDDI. It's great for some applications, but it can go overboard and get clanky-sounding really quickly. It also has a tendency to suck out the mids. I'd like something a little more tonally neutral.
I don't have any experience with Shuttles, but if you're looking for an affordable tube pedal, the Tubeworks Blue Tube sometimes pops up in the classifieds for a third of the price of a new EBS Valve Drive.
Thanks for the suggestion, jumblemind. I'll have to look into the Blue Tube.
I'm definitely interested in true tube overdrives, but I'm open to nice sounding solid states, too. I just watched a review of the Way Huge Green Rhino being used with a bass. It wasn't quite like my Shuttle, but it sounded pretty nice. I'm also intrigued by the Sparkle Drive. I know it's one among a million Tube Screamer clones, but it seems like that clean blend would be nice for bass. Anyone have any experience with either of these guitar-minded pedals on a bass?
I'm always grateful for any help, and TalkBass is one of the most helpful places I've found.
Have you considered trying to trade up to a ShuttleMax? With the Max series you can switch between the solid-state and tube channels with a footswitch. So long as you like the sound of the solid-state channel, you can use that for general play and keep the tube channel set for your preferred level of grit. I'd imagine you could either find someone on TB to swap with or sell the Shuttle and buy a Max used for maybe slightly more cash.
