Something to add a BANG!

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for an effect that makes a huge bang/low bass shot on a single note. Kinda like for a song that builds up and then stops for a beat before exploding on something.

For comparison. www.myspace.com/baimetal
Listen to Kadoush, you'll see what I mean.

I spoke to those guys and they said its an effect used at the recording studio but I'm wondering if there is some sort of equivalent.

Thanks

It's usually called a bass drop and unless you run a laptop/synth at your live shows you most likely wont be able to reproduce it live.

It's probably a drum pad. You can pull it off any number of ways. There are drum pads you can on stage. You can use a phrase sampler and record the sound before hand. You can use a midi setup.

The easiest thing to integrate into a pedalboard would be the Boss PC-2:

http://www.noiseguide.com/product_in...ynthesizer_pc2

It's stompbox size, has a big pad you can stomp, and can be tuned to give you a deep 808-style analog kick sound, which is what you're talking about.

Sounds like something that could easily ruin some speakers if it's dialed up to high for to big of a big big bang boom whoooooom.

drum pad with an 808 patch. That's the boom you are looking for.

There you go. I know that us bassists get all hot and bothered by the idea of the big bass drop in electronic or heavy music (Listen to the band For Today, they use the 808 bass drop sound all the time) but it's time that we all let go of the dream that we will be able to recreate that sound. It's our drummer's territory.

Just for the record, if you're working with a cheap/poor drummer who at least has a laptop, you can set up a Rock Band drum set as a poor man's MIDI controller to trigger a computer drum program, a la Fruity Loops. My drummer did it, although we haven't had a chance to sucessfully make it work live, mostly because anything is going to sound a WHOLE lot different through headphones or computer speakers than it will through a big ol' PA system.

My favorite 808 drop is in Foam Born: Decade of Statues- Between the Buried and Me.

Just FYI, that's exactly what the PC-2 I linked above is.

If you dig BTBAM, you should check out For Today. Similar vein of music, but a little more on the hardcore end of things. Super, super technical, though. Their latest album is called Portraits, and it is amazing.

A lot of loop pedals will play a one shot, so if you have any use for one (or if your guitarist does), you can invest in something that is used more than once per show.
