Somewhat of a rant, classifieds related

Sign in to disble this ad
So I may be alone but it is extremely annoying when I am looking at a pedal in the effects for sale section and all you post is the name, a blurry pic or no pic at all, and the price. At least tell us what it does (delay, fuzz, chorus, etc.).

There are so many boutique FX, DIY kits and small business manufacturers out there with bazillions of different models and variations of those bazillion different models. Throw a dog a bone why don't ya? I don't have hours to spend searching google and youtube for clips and vids trying to figure out what it does. Just say it's a Brand X Thingamabob FLANGER. Thank you.

/end rant.

Just to play devil's advocate, would you really buy a "Brand X Thingamabob FLANGER" without doing a bit of research on it?

This sounds more like a typical RE: post on Craigslist, but I'm with you.

I can understand blurry cell phone pics if you don't have a camera and if you plan to put new ones up after borrowing a better camera but If someone can't or won't go to the trouble to put some effort into the written body of their ad what are the chances they are going to accurately describe the item (if at all) or pack it properly?

If they can't be bothered to put up a half way decent ad then I can't be bothered to give them my money. Next.

i think that for you to post in the classifieds that it should be somewhat descriptive but it should still allow the curious party research space. every pedal is an investment of some sort so if you really want it then look into it. a good pic from the selling party is a must if you ask me

If I was in the market for a flanger then yes, but just to say "Brand X Thingamabob" doesn't do me any good when there is little or no information on it. That's what I'm talking about though - not every pedal has a review or a youtube clip that I can check out. Some don't even have a website or a guy to talk to. I like cool and different effects but I'm not savvy on all the underground "you gotta talk to a guy who knows a guy" kinda pedals. My money is just as green as everyone else's though!

I think its a little pretentious when guys post threads along the lines of "Selling X pedal. If you're looking here you already know what it is"

I figure if I don't know what it is, I don't need to buy it.

Its true, as much as i dislike rants, i dislike searching online for hours just to find out the pedal didnt do what i thought it did!

I have bought a few pedals and it would be really helpful if each post had a photo, and a description of what the pedal can do, or even a "this pedal makes the effects used in X song(s)" would be nice.

I wonder into many threads just cause the pedal name sounds cool, and then find out theres almost no info online haha

Agreed. Very good point, and I have personally wasted time doing research on a pedal only to find out it is not even the type of effect I am looking for.

This drives me nuts on eBay, too. "If you're looking at this, then you know what it is and what it does." That just sounds lazy to me. I do a blind "envelope filter" search on eBay almost every day, and I often see pedals that I've never seen before. Intrigued, I click on the auctions and have to read that dang "If you're looking at this" line. I don't expect the seller to write a book; just tell me your personal experience with the pedal, and why I should spend money on it as opposed to something else. Yes, I know what an envelope filter is and what it does, but that doesn't exactly narrow it down! There are TONS of filter pedals out there! A little info, especially first-hand info, goes a long way. From there, I can decide whether or not to research it further. A decent picture helps a lot, too! And that's my rant for the day.
