Soundclips - Modded MXR Phase 90

I performed this mod on a stock block logo Phase 90 - http://www.erikhansen.net/?page_id=31 - the result was a more "vintage" sounding phaser, and the annoying gain and mid boost was gone. I know, the distorted clips sound crappy. Make sure you turn up the volume on your speakers and on the zshare file (it's at half if you don't change it) for the clips to sound decent.

The first clip is with the speed knob at 12 o'clock. My poor rendition of Dancing in the Moonlight.

The next two clips are the Phase 90 before and after dirt. Before is subtler, and after is pronounced.

I think I liked it best before the distortion, I kind of like it nice and subtle. Like I said it's been awhile since I've played a modded block logo Phase 90 I'm going to look into picking one up to mod it sometime...

Damn, I didn't think there was anything wrong with MXR phasers. I loved my Phase 100. I just never used it.

There's nothing "wrong" with them, but if the gain/mid boost is annoying, there is an easy fix.

I like the small stone a lot better. The Mxr phasers are too subtle to me... which is a bummer, because I'd love a phaser in wah-style-enclosure..

I kind of like the sublety of the modded phase 90, I'm thinking of trading in my Nano Small Stone for a modded block logo Phase 90. I'm really into what can keep the bite of my distorted sound despite the modulation with modulation pedals, and where that's concerned the subtler the better.

I like the subtlety of the first clip. It's kind of a slight coloration, and I think that would be easy to use in a band situation just to add a little spice. I could definitely see getting away with using that tone a lot. A deeper, less subtle phase is cool too, but depending on what kind of bass line you're playing you might not want something that completely takes over the tone. I like adding a little spice with a phaser, the guitar player in my band is really into that too, he uses the EVH Phase 90 with the script switch. Has a lot of potential to get a little different texture.

Yeah I like that tone too. Also, if I turn the speed knob any slower, I find that it is too subtle. How does it compare to the nano small stone?

The Nano Small Stone is a deeper and darker phaser, it does also get more subtle when you lower the rate, which I kind of like it with a low rate, maybe around 10 o'clock, but it still robs my bite with my overdrive like that, which I don't remember if the modded Phase 90 will do that. I never use the color switch on the EHX because the effect gets too intense for me with it, but it can be kind of funky.

I think I like it better before the dirt too. I like the small stone better though, I think, with the color switch off and the speed around 9:00 or less.
