It sounds like explosions...

or mountains grinding together in a massive earthquake. A band called Torche does it. Listen to the break down type part in Tarpit Carnivore starting at 2 minutes, 14 seconds.

Down-tuning to the floppy noteless point + heavy distortion? Or something else? I must know...

Sounds like an octave down through a fuzz.

I don't know exactly what that is...BUT I WANT IT!

They are coming to town May 11th with the Sword, and I really hope they play that song.

They'll be up by Cincinnati on the 12th. If that wasn't a Monday I'd probably go check them out.

I saw them in Montreal and didn't realize that they (partly) used to be Floor until midway through the set. The bassist plays a 4-string (sorry, don't remember the kind) but at least one of the guitars is also tuned down to what people call the "bomb note" or "bomb" string. See here: http://www.monotremata.com/dead/arch...interview.html I think if you dropped a low B to an A it wouldn't be deep enough or floppy enough.

If you have a chance to go see them, make the effort. I went to see Jesu and Tim Hecker and they were inbetween and it was the most wonderful surprise. One of the best heavy bands out there and a great live sound.

It's sorta reminiscent of that sound Claypool gets when he's just wanking on his whammy bar.

I like them. It's like sludge metal without the patience.

They use a similar sound on the first track of the self titled album. I thought it was some sort of drum machine bass bomb sample on that track but this sound is slightly different and now I'm more confused than ever. I love their music but if you listen to some of the lyrics they can be a little disappointing - very flowerchild/burnt out hippie sounding on some songs.

De-tuned beyond F (it's lower than that since that's where I play in Bongripper) I forget what pedal he uses if any. But I do know he plays loud. Low B or A is no where near low enough for that sound. I got a drop tuner on my one bass that is set up for F tuning, when I drop down to about a C that is about the right sound (that's a C an octave lower than tuning to C from standard E).

It's like the Melvins only somehow more Melvinish.

I agree with the floppy string theory.

I will have to check these guys out when they come to town in June.
