Anybody have any ideas about what kind of effects to buy for "space music"?
I'm a guy from the 70's and 80's trying to get into it again and there's so much new stuff it's hard to get a handle on it. i'm looking for something "quality"

Phaser and delay are the effects I'd recommend. As to the brands and models, you'll find many specific recommendations by searching on "phaser" and "delay".

Short delay works nice for ambience. So does light reverb.

space music? I assume your talking pink floyd type ambience?

Step One: Get a delay.
Step Two: Get another delay.
Step Three: Get another delay.
Step Four: Get a solid fuzz pedal.
Step Five: Get another delay.
Step Six: Get like 80 other pedals

Oh, and look for digital delay units that can do "reverse delay", that can be very spacey and trippy, especially if you follow it with a big reverb.

You can simulate alien mating calls and whales humping with a volume swell pedal.

Now that you're on to space effects, I hope you guys don't mind me asking another question Is that intro space thingy in Orion by Metallica a keyboard effect or a heavy distorted bassline? if so, anyone know how Cliff created it?

(Sorry for hijack, I thought it had relevance)

I know this one's been asked before, but it's been a long while, so it's okay

IIRC, it's a distorted Hammond organ, and I think Kirk Hammett played the notes. I believe that's also the case with the introduction to "Damage, Inc.".

The bass is following the rhythm guitar for much of the song, but if you listen carefully, you can hear its growly notes stick out above the distorted organ droning below.

I wasn't referring to the guitar part of the intro, but yeah, it does sound like that.

I was talking about that distorted growl that comes in through the intro, before the main riff and drums start.
