Okay, this is what I need:
A rack compressor, that will be placed in the effects loop of a Trace Elliot AH 300 Series 6 head and will protect my cab's speakers from all the oscillations, excessive distortions and volume spikes my effects produce. It has to be cheap.
Things that would be cool but are not vital:
- while playing clean it would make me sound better (fatter, more focused tone)
- easy to use
So, what unit am I talking about? |

I have it in the effects loop of my head and it works well there. I got mine used off eBay for $125. With that said, I open the floor for MaxCom bashing. |

I know nothing bout their compressors, but for "fat" and clean smooth sound, I completely recommend the BBE stuff, I got a sonic stomp (as well as I have the aphex bass exciter), and I use the bass exciter to get subharmonics, but the sonic stomp is in the end of my chain to "smooth" the sound, it might be subtile, but it sure makes the difference.

There are some very good analog limiters, of course, but even the best of them will fail to catch transient spikes that pop up outside the envelope speed of the compression device. I think I recall the MaxCom having a very high ratio available, so it's an OK option, but if you want something cheap to rein in your filters and delays pretty well, I'd steer you to the Alesis Micro Limiter or the Guyatone BL2. They aren't perfect, but they do a hell of a job for the money. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
