Specific Question Moog Low Pass Filter Owners/Users (Clip Inside)

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright. Well I'm quite happy with my setup atm and liking everything on my board except I've grown to hate my dunlop bass wah. Basically I've found over several purchases that I am not a envelope filter or wah person. Fun to play with, but I am useless at implementing them into songs.

There is however one function that my wah serves that I love and would like to keep going with but hopefully in a better fashion.

I made a clip to demonstrate.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/defa...?bandID=873708

Its bass into overdrive and delay and then I use the wah to manually sweep as carefully as I can through from heal to toe going from bassy to trebley.

I love this effect and I was wondering if the Moog Low Pass would do it better (obviously with expression pedal)?.

The important things are that it matches the wah in the ways that count.

- That it can increase in volume when engaged, louder than my original dry tone
- That it can go bassier and finish treblier than my original tone
- It can be engaged simply by pushing down on the expression pedal (like the auto engage function on the dunlops treadle).

I'm also hoping there would be a vast improvement in the sweep. I'd like it to be bigger and feel nicer. I have to be extremely careful when using the wah in this way because its sweep is quite short. I imagine this is altered by your choice of expression pedal?

Now I know its massive and the bypass is supposed to be sucky, but that what gets said about the dunlop wah and I'm quite happy with my tone atm.

Another thing - anyone know what mA draw it takes? I know theres a 220 volt version that would work in Australia but i wonder if it would be eaiser to power it with a self bought adaptor/chain.

Also if anyone has any other ideas I'm all ears.

THANKS HEAPS!!!

hmmm... actually for a full range sweep i would recommend an alesis philtre.

does lowpass to hipass and can be engaged to sync to your beat.

Cool clip.

To answer your question, the Moog is probably not what you're looking for in this case.

Someone with more electronics knowledge can correct me if I'm wrong, but a wah is a band-pass filter and the Moog is obviously a low-pass filter. What this means is that the wah allows you to shift what frequencies are being emphasized where the low pass just determines what the cutoff is for frequencies.

So with the expression pedal connected to "cutoff" and rocking it forward it doesn't go from "bassy" to "trebly" but rather from letting in only very low frequency notes to allowing the whole frequency spectrum in. The Moog is now the centerpiece of my pedalbaord and I love the thing, but I don't think it is what you need, at least for this purpose.

+1

Icarus, I have a suggestion for you. The EHX Tube EQ has high and low shelving filters, but it also has a semi-parametric band-pass, and it has an expression jack to control the center freq of the bandpass. Plus, it has a gain control so that you could boost volume. This sounds like it might be what you're looking for.

Thanks tons for that Big O, I almost didn't make this thread and if I had bought the Moog without knowing that it would have been a number of dollareedoos gone.

The alesis looks a bit more to be a studio/DJ tool. I know thats what I'm trying to emulate but ideally I'd like to be able to do it with just my foot like my wah.

I suppose the only problem with the wah is the terrible treadle. I doubt any other wah would sound better for this function either.

Wow, I didn't realize it had an expression jack. Too bad it's enormous and has that ridiculous power supply.

Yeah thats probablly my gripe. Having owned the Muff'n before, the power supply is bonkers on these things. Size I can probablly live with. Plus my experience with Tube pedals so far has been not so great.
