I am actually building myself something similar, but using very thick, heavy springs to make it sound more metallic and springy. I plan to put it in a rack case. I think a lot can be done with mechanical effects; eventually I'll have an entirely mechanical effects setup using objects and acoustic media. Fun stuff.
