Suggest a flanger pedal

I need a flanger, but I'm not sure which one to get. I need control of LFO rate and depth, regen and pre-delay/"manual", in a pedalboard-friendly size and shape and no weird power requirements. I would also prefer something that can me bought new. Any suggestions?

(BF2 is discontinued, BF3 isn't velcro-friendly, M117 needs 18V...)

I wish Boss would bring back the BF-2B. I have a mid 80s model and while a lil noisy, absolutely crushes the standard 2 and 3.

Line 6 M5?

Comes with power, has 4 different flangers (IIRC)... bulky size, but for what you get it's not bad at all. I bought it to cover all the sounds that I needed to use here and there, but didn't want to need to keep buying another random pedals. Couldn't be happier.

Personally, I like the older "non-bass" MIJ Boss BF-2. If you're the least bit patient it can be found for US$50 or so on eBay, CL, here on TB sometimes. I actually prefer the sound to the "bass-specific" BF-2B. No accounting for taste sometimes.......

Only caveat is it needs Boss ACA but you can get around that by daisy-chaining it with any "standard" 9v or PSA pedal. Or run it with 9v battery. No hassle.

If you get one and don't like it you can always flip it easily enough and not lose any money.

I had one of the "green label"/MIJ 2's right before this, and my issue was with how my band downtunes, the 2 just didn't give enough "effect" to make it stand out. I would only be able to play the D and G strings which were detuned a step to C and F, so it wasn't that fun. The 2B holds solid on my B and E strings tuned to A and C.
On an E std tuned bass it worked just fine though.

I currently play a low B, and plan on going lower.

The DOD FX72 killed both the BF2 and 3 when I tried them against each other. And it wasn't close. Sounds thick, fat, and has a big resonant swoosh to it.

This right hurr. Flangers aren't my thing but I can't deny that this is the **** for fat, jet engine flanging.

I have no idea what that means, other than that the FX72 is not an option.

Or you could, you know, buy used, since I'm pretty sure the FX72 is no longer made.

Don't get too hung up on buying something new, you're ruling out some really good choices by ignoring used pedals.

You do have a point, but I would prefer to leave buying used as a last resort. If there is no other option, then certainly.

Why? Some of the best sounding pedals (subjective, I know) aren't made anymore or are much cheaper used. Plus, if you don't like it and decide to sell it you're not losing nearly as much as you would if you'd bought it new and resold it. There really is no drawback.

If I buy used, I only have the seller's word that it's not a scam and that it works.

That's why there are feedback systems here, on eBay, and other sides and why PayPal has ways to get your money back if you do wind up being scammed. A lot of us started off as "new only" pedal users until we saw the light, savings, and realized this was a good place to buy used from.
