suitable pedal for achieving stereotypical drum and bass sound

Hey there just interested in finding out if any of you had used any pedals that managed to emulate the classic drum and bass / jungle bass sound. I suppose you could use a combination of pedals...?

cheers,

Tom

Im not sure about what pedal would do it, but I would put my money on using a Jazz bass.

I played on a bill with a band who did live drum and bass. The bassist was using a Boss octave pedal with the dry knob on zero and the 1 octave down knob maxed. He played everything one octave up and the tone was huge. I highly recommend checking one out.

I guess you could try the EHX bass micro synth, and the Wooley Mammoth can get some nice and nasty buzzy synth tones.

That's a good tone, v. useful.

There are a few useful sounds for D&B you can get out of a BMS using a combination of attack speed, filter sweep speed and a very low start or stop freq.

You might also want to find a low-pass filter with exp. pedal control over the cut-off. I use a Robot Factory Meatwad with the envelope follower switched off - it gets really boomy towards the bottom of the pedal travel. The Moog Low-Pass Filter would be a good choice too.

I really want a jazz bass, a really good deal on the 60's jazz bass reissue at the moment. I've got to put up with an ibanez artcore with roto flats at the moment.

cheers

I've got a vintage Colorsound Octivider up in the classifieds section.

It tracks really well for a vintage pedal, down to about F#.

Thread: FS/FT Feeler - VTwin and Colorsound Octavider

Good pedals - like good anything - generally are pretty expensive. Look for used gear though, there are tonnes of used Boss OC-2s on eBay all the time so prices are generally stable, and the older-style EHX Bass Micro Synths might start turning up more frequently now they've released the smaller "XO" version. The filter will probably be the most expensive part of your rig but it's the most crucial part.

Now that I've thought about it, I'd recommend the Moog filter. Expensive but all those jacks on the back will come in very handy with the sort of music you're doing.

I've got a Boss OC-3 up in the classifieds. Not sure how the international shipping would work, but we might be able to work something out.

Skindred is great! Could you tell me something about the bass players gear? basses, amps, anything you remember... I guess Skindred is the same guys as Dubwar, except the bass player? One of my all time favourites

well from what i remember he had quite a good solid setup, svt2pro head, nice big old ampeg cab and a bass that looked kind of like a gibson grabber, not too sure. And yeah as for what he had on the floor well i can't remember either, think he had an octaver but all the same i had a chat with him afterwards and he was a really nice guy.

Dub Trio supported them though, stu brooks is an absolute beast on bass, his sound was the best i've ever heard by far, he had a jazz with flats, and since dub trio were supporting skindred on the tour brooks didnt bring is aguilar which is a bit disappointed because i really fancy getting one myself. the dub trio guys were so nice as well, and i got one of my few bass compliments ever, that he thought my lines were smooth, haha this guys played with the game and stuff- absolutely mental.

cheers yeah the moog would be a nice wee thing to have in the studio as well, and yeah the money thing i'd have to agree with i found that out with the sansamp which i really like using

I took a listen. To my ears it sounded like an octave divider on low, with an envelope follower. It sounds like there's some clean bass sound in there as well, but no more than 10-15% of the overall sound.

And fyi that pedal that I referenced i'd let go for $115 shipped, but let me try and get some recordings this weekend to see how close I can get to what you're after with my effects.

Good luck!

That is exactly what it sounds like to me as well. octave-down + env. filter.

So I managed to do a low-tech recording of my pedal, just to give you an idea.

It's primarily useful at the 5th fret on the A string and above (I can get sounds and tracking out of it, just doesn't perform really well below that).

Here's a clip I made:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/17060687d1570c6e/

and here's one with clean blended in as well (also available through the pedal)

http://www.zshare.net/audio/170617682a196a4f/

This is recorded with my custom jazz/tele, bartolini pups, roundwounds -> octivider -> cheapo Fender Rumble 15 -> cheapo $3 computer mic -> windows sound recorder

Reference clean, then effected, then blended.

Sounds so hot I'm thinking about keeping it now!

Maybe tomorrow or the weekend I'll do another for you with my Mutron III after it and see how close I can get to the tone you referenced in the youtube clip.

I think it's actually a whammy pedal set for thirds with a filter (probably envelope). That's what it sounds like to me.

Great tone - definitely gotta try it!
