Sussudio Synth Sound???

Sign in to disble this ad
I know the original bass line is a Moog Synth, but I've seen a LOT of videos of Nathan East and Lee Sklar playing the parts on their electric basses. One or two may have been pre-taped for various TV shows (debatable), but many are truly authentic.

So what kind of synth would get me close to that sound? I highly doubt I'll ever play Sussudio live with anyone (does anyone do that?), but I'd love to know how one might obtain a similar synth sound.

I occasionally have need for synth bass sounds and even though I took my obligatory piano lessons as a kid, I'd rather just do it on the bass. Perhaps something programmable like the Markbass would be ideal. Then again, who doesn't want a Moog Little Fatty?

Edit: Sussudio is a Phil Collin's song from about '85, if you're not familiar with it...

Dave Smith MoPho, cheaper and smaller than Moog's Little Phatty, and has so much more going on. There's lots of bass synth pedals, and some are really good, but none can touch an actual analog keyboard synth.

MoPho isn't, but Evolver is almost there for getting sound OP wants.

(if one is not familiar with Evo structure, get informed at DSI website) I don't know if that bassline is actually Moog (Mini or other), but it's definitely 4 pole VCF. 90% of the sound comes from filter in this case (that is, source feeding VCF is not of paramount importance; as well as VCO, it could be distorted bass guitar). Key ingredients in original sound: low cutoff, high resonance, short filter envelope, high env->cutoff amount, filter tracking. Neat trick with Evo is that external sound source can trigger internal Envelopes (no env detector can produce envelope CV that consistent and short). OTOH, I think VCF in Evo would be a bit too clean for this sound. As well consistent source sound and filter tracking is also impossible.

I would go like this: bass->DI->Evo(with a bit of internal Evo distortiona added, short Env and External to Env trigger)
