sustain issues

Sign in to disble this ad
'Evening again.

Changed a Boss CS-3 compressor in favor of an EBS Multicomp. Sounds much better (tubesim) but not getting as much sustain as with the Boss unit, no matter what settings I use. I sort of liked that sustain, had it usually set at 1:30 or 2 o'clock.

Is it me or is it the unit ? Even thought of adding something like the EHX Soul Preacher, but the unit I tried in the shop was a little too noisy for my taste.

There's also a compression dial on my amp head (Hartke 5500) that is usually set around the 11 am - noonish mark. I get some annoying clipping if I don't use it. Also used it with the Boss pedal and sustain wasn't an issue at that point, so I'm figuring that ain't the problem.

Thoughts, anyone ?

Sustain from a compressor is a result of a medium-to-high ratio and a medium-to-low threshold. The CS-3 is designed that way inherently, while the EBS is not, and neither of them offers a whole lot of control to dial in the response. So that's the difference you're hearing. What you want is a comp that either has ratio and threshold controls, or that happens to be inherently designed similarly to the CS-3 in that way. There are many options, at a variety of price points, but I am first going to recommend the Pigtronix "Philosopher's Tone". I bet it will suit you fine.

Look into the Demeter Compulator as well. I used to use the compression on my head to handle nasty clipping, but the DC is 1,000,000 times better than head compression any day of the week.
Silent, easily tweakable, and has GREAT limiting too that doesn't have that "swallow up my tone quickly" sound.
I bought it upon Bongo's review and haven't been this happy with a pedal EVER before buying one.

Hit the link in Bongo's sig. It's a vast database of comp reviews. The Demeter is one of the highest ratings.

.

So I've found out in the last 24 hours...

I just bought the Multicomp and am really happy with the tone and versatility. So now I'm having crazy ideas about ADDING something like the PT or the EHX Soul Preacher (although I am weary of its noise-generating capacity, as outlined by Bongo's review and comments on Harmony-Central) just to benefit from the sustain feature.

Where's my shrink when I REALLY need her...
