Along with tube noise be aware that one of the major weakness of this unit is that it is sensitive to shock such as jarring or (heaven-forbid, dropping). The power transformer is attached to the PCB with very fragile leads that will shear off should this happen. I was able to find a damaged unit very reasonably priced and this was the case. The transformer is not available from Loud nor is it from their supplier in Chicago. I was able to restore by carefully removing some of the covering and re-soldering to the coil taps inside. Unit powers up fine now-I will never let it wander from my rack though.

Yeah, I had an SVP-Pro until I got sick of the tone and I wanted an all-in-one head.

Basically, the same thing happened to me with the transformer. I bought it used from TB, and when it arrived the transformer was broken off at 3-4 of the leads. Fedex must have dropped it out of the plane or something.

Fortunately, I have a good amp tech in my area (Ho's Electronics). He said the transformer was okay, and he re-soldered the leads using small pieces of wire. He also hot-glued the transformer into place and used tie-downs.

Overall, I wasn't very impressed with the build quality of this thing (neither was my tech) and was happy to see it go.

I would agree with you about the workmanship-lots of glue and cold solder joints. Better designs seem to use less glue. I was surprised they used an 8v supply to the audio chips-more voltage would allow better dynamic range. I haven't put the thing into my amp rack yet so we will see how much tone versatility there really is. This will run into a Rane active x-over and into a QSC RMX1850 powering two Omni-12s and an 18" sub. I originally was looking for a Tech-21 but at $150 and a repair I thought I'd take the challenge with the Ampeg. The V4B is always there with good sound and lower output if this doesn't work out.
