SVT-4 Pro's Compressor

What is the advantage to an outboard compressor vs. my built in compression circuit in my SVT-4 Pro? Obviously, more knobs equals more control, but my amp's compressor sounds pretty good--compared to nothing, however. Just looking for advice to people who have used both. I have an expensive amp that included a compressor...do I really need an out board unit?

I haven't used the one in your amp. It can vary- the comp built into Eden amps is not so great IMO, definitely beaten by any good pedal; but the one built into Phil Jones amps is good enough to compete with outboard units. I'd say see if you can borrow a few pedals from friends, or try them out at stores or buddies' jam rooms, just to see what you think.

Or buy and return at Guitar Center, right?

The 4-Pro's compressor sounded alright to me. Better than some other compressors I've tried on amps. The best compressors on the market are supposed to leave your tone as natural as possible, so that's one thing that might be improved with a dedicated compressor. Also, the ability to adjust the compression settings (attack, threshold, etc) make it more powerful. Of course, some players never even use a compressor. If your SVT works for you, you might not need anything more.
