svt sound without svt

Sign in to disble this ad
ok , sorry for all the threads, but this one should do it...
what are my options for getting an svt tone and growl without buying an svt
things I'm looking into currently are tech 21 Bass VT, and hoping maybe to find a multi with decent svt modeling

The VT Bass (or the BDDI) is probably your best bet as a single pedal.

As for multis, it's been a while since I played with one, but I remember the Line 6 Bass Pod's SVT model being pretty good. My general take on the Bass Pod was that the amp modeling was the best part and that the effects were okay.

I owned both the SVT and the BDDI - the BDDI does a very, very good job.

How about EVERY Ampeg sound you could ever want?

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/ampegsvx/

Most people don't realize that this is available as a standalone app complete with tons of virtual Ampeg amps, cabinets, mic options, a tuner, effects, metronome, the ability to play mp3s through it and slow down the tempo without changing pitch (for practicing songs), etc.

It's a great tool for the cost of a high-end boutique stompbox and the sound is spot on!

that looks really cool, but its a little out of my price range, and I need something for my live rig.

That would solve the price issue, but not the "need something for my live rig" issue. Most people don't consider a laptop to be a practical need for a live rig.

I think the only thing that will make you sound 100% like an SVT, is an SVT. The BDDI sounds great, but it doesn't quite get there. Line 6's SVT preset is about 75% there, but leaves just enough room for improvement to make me not like it.

The SVX is a great app, much better at getting bass sounds than Guitar Rig 3. Don't use it live though, even on an uber-fast DAW machine, I still managed to get it to fart and glitch every once in a while. Imagine a nice digital *SHHHZT* going through a 4kW FOH. Yikes!

Lowend is right, only an SVT is going to sound like an SVT 100%, but if you have good speakers I'm positive that the VT Bass will get you so close that it will be hard to hear the difference, particularly in a live mix.

I have no experience with the VT Bass, so if you say it, I'll take your word for it. No pedal or effect is going to turn a Crate amp into a roaring SVT, you need a good amp and cab to start with. Might I suggest an SVT?

I know NOTHING is going to sound 100 percent like an svt other than an svt. I can't afford an svt by any means, and I already have a powerful, clean, reliable rig. So it was a quest to get as close as possible without actually changing rigs.
I've decided on the VT bass

Hurrah! I think you've made the best choice given your requirements. Now good luck finding one, they tend to sell out rather quickly...

Here's a good setting to start you off:

Level - wherever gives you unity gain
Bass - 12 o'clock
Mids - 1 o'clock
Treble - 11 o'clock
Character - 11 o'clock
Drive - 11 o'clock

Loads more settings in the main VT Bass thread.

I know of two places the same distance from here that have them. BUT after practicing tonight, I don't know if I want one for sure. I turned my rig up higher than normal, and if I crank the gain on my amp, it sounds SO much better than it did before. It doesn't sound like an svt, but it sounds good enough that I'm wondering if just a normal overdrive pedal would be enough, not to sound like an svt, but to still have a really good classic rock growl instead of spending 150 on something I don't know if I'll need.
And the try before I buy thing isn't going to help me since i'll be playing through a different rig than mine, so theres no telling what it will sound like on mine

There's no way to know whether any other "overdrive pedal" out there is going to get you the sound you want. If the sound of an SVT is what you want, $150 is a small price to pay to know that you're going to be happy.
