Personally, I don't think so. If you've not already, tune your G string up to A so your bass is E-A-D-A. Play the riff on the top 'A' string. As it uses lots of open string 'A', I find that, if you leave it unmuted, the second 'A' string (one octave down) will sound quietly in sympathy which gives a sort of drone effect. It doesn't work in other tunings as you need the two strings to be tuned to the same note. Hope that helps.

That's cool. I never heard of that before. Are you saying to play the whole riff on the G (tuned up to A) string? Is that how Tom H does it?

Sorry, I didn't check out the video. Dial up here. lol

I use a chorus on it. Tom Hamilton doesn't alter his tuning for the song. It's played at the 12th fret on the A,D and G strings.

I believe he plays EADG, he seems to be playing it in EADG and also the octaves Tom plays in the verses would be a long stretch.

Standard tuning. Just for fun (and because its layered in the recording with marimba or something), during the intro I play it with harmonics at the 12th and 7th frets, except for a slide on the last two notes. I used settings in between subtle flange and chorus.

Here's how I've adapted the intro:

/ \ = slide
x = harmonic
* = partial harmonic (open string sounds too because you let off at the right moment)

Code:
   x x x x x * x x / \
G -------12-------------------------
D -------------7--------12----11-12- (alternate with 12-11)
A -12-12----7-----12-------12-------
E ----------------------------------

I personally prefer to do swells with my wah and add a bit of delay.

I know it's not an effect unit per se, but anybody get the harmonics happenin' yet? It took me awhile between realizing this part could be played that way and actually being able to do it smoothly and with good volume.

Yeah...I played it for years with the harmonics, makes it an easy riff! gotta thank Chris Squire for my use of harmonics, though.

Yessir, greenboy. I gave the harmonics version a spin this morning after I reading your post, and it's pretty cool. I'll probably mix it into my fingerstyle version of this line the next time the tune gets called.

Yeah, I just use the harmonics during the intro, with whatever effects blended... I love it when the pattern drops down to E during the big guitar solo, BTW - with a good Joe Perry head playing the guitar there it's such a rush to be supplying the bombast!
