He's using a Symetrix compressor.

Is there something unique or special about this compessor? Is there a compressor pedal that sounds like a Symetrix?

I haven't tried the Symetrix but based on Bongomania's reviews I suspect the Maxon CP-9+pro would be somewhat similar. http://www.ovnilab.com/index.shtml

Yeah, that's a decent suggestion. It's tough though, because there actually is something special about certain Symetrix comps, and it's the specific VCA chip they use. Some of the older ones used a chip by Allison/Valley People, and a bit later Symetrix developed and used their own VCA. Later ones used chips developed by dbx, and it's those that will be most similar to the Maxon CP9Pro+. I actually don't know of a pedal that exactly mimics the action and sound of the early Symetrix units. I think the closest might be the Joemeek FloorQ or the FEA Opti-FET, even though both are optical comps, not VCA. I just have an intuitive memory-sensation of them sounding/responding a bit like the early Symetrix.

I've had a 501 for years, you can find them cheap.
