Is this a synth bass, octave effect or something else?

Here's the youtube link:

Eh Eh - Bass - YouTube

It's a catchy song, very '80s. Very nice bass work IMO. Hopefully my band can add it to our list of covers, our vocalist is really into Lady GaGa so it shouldn't be hard to sell.

I'd just like to know what kind of effect is on the bass, the way it gets kinda fuzzy with low notes makes me think it could be a light octave effect because I've heard they lose their tracking with low notes, but it also kinda sounds synthy.

Thanks in advance for helping me nail this.

Definitely a keyboard synth. I think it would be kinda of difficult to replicate on bass...

I've got a few ideas about how to get close to that, but all of them involve parallel signal paths and two or more octave pedal/ pitch shifters.

I think I might be able to play in that neighborhood with my Badger parallel looper and my M13, but I can't be sure and don't have my effects hooked up now to try.

Not an easy task to be sure.

Roland GR-55 PCM synths are the only thing I'm aware of that can generate those truly synth sounding voices.

I didn't go dig up the original track, but that bassline video you posted is an late '70s/early '80s Casio keyboard using the Electric Piano or Piano setting.

I suspect that if I were to listen to the original track, I'd hear something quite different, as that bassline you posted isn't really very low, and I doubt a producer would put out a dance track without a punchy bassline....

I had one of those, very wild and non-standard type of synth. I should bid on that one, because they are ludicrously programmable.

I pulled mine out of storage for a gig this summer. When they're called for, they are an awesome tool.

I just got one a few months ago at Goodwill. I need to fix it though.
