Synth(?) Discussion (modulation?)

Right, so tonight I'm with my "other" band (where I don't use effects) and we're taking a break and I'm outside smoking and an ice cream van is driving around somewhere nearby playing Green Sleeves, and it dawns on me that it's using a square wave for the sounds but it sounds a bit rounder because there's a very echoey reverb on it.

And I accidentally say out loud "A-ha!" and declare that I'd always wondered why ice cream vans sound better than my bass, but anyway...

I do like a nice raw waveform, but I wonder what's the best way to round off the edges sometimes. Filters I know about, but I've tried chorus and other tricks with delays and never really got anywhere nice. At least now I know how to sound like an ice cream van if that need ever arises, but I was wondering what everybody else is using after the waveform (or fuzz, or whatever you're using), and what sort of results you're aiming for?
