Synth-esque bass tone needed...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey gang. This could be my first time posting over on effects.

I play in a cover band, mix of 60's-90's rock/pop stuff. I run a Jazz bass dry mostly, with VT pedal for a little grit in some songs. I typically just alter finger style or the tone knob to approximate bass tones in various songs. Well we recently added a couple of tunes in which I find my tone sorely lacking.

I am looking for some way to get more of a synth bass tone, or even a decent way to "fake" a synth bass tone.

Here are some clips of what I am after:
Rock of Ages
Der Kommisar
Come back (the bass solo in the middle at 2:07)

You get the idea.

Any help, from el-cheapo to the right way to do it is greatly appreciated.

I dont have a budget yet, but considering its for 3-5 songs total, le$$ is more.

Well, those are 3 different synth bass tones to my ear. You could probably pull off Der Kommisar with an envelope filter plus your VT Bass. You might be able to do likewise with Rock of Ages, I'm not sure how fuzzy the VT can get. Come Back is more synthy to my ear, it almost sounds like like a flanger or phaser rather than an envelope filter but it's got a really synthy attack. For this you might want a real synth pedal, maybe digital like the Markbass rather than analog like the BMS. But take my advice with a grain of salt 'cause I'm no Thomas Dolby. I've only ever owned one synth pedal (twice).

If you're looking for really budget, check out the Behringer BSY-600. It is a clone of the Boss SYB-5, but I actually think it's better than the Boss. When you max the decay knob, it disables the filter sweep, and just gives you a straight synth tone. For 40 bucks, it's impossible to beat.

OK, thanks very much for pointing me in a direction.

I'll give them a look and get back to (the thread) if I have other questions etc.
