synth + octaver= envelope filter????

I heard once that if you put an octaver in front of a synth you get an envelope filter sound. Does anyone know if this actually works?

I think you have that backwards. A lot of people say that octaver + env filter is a good way to get synth sounds. I don't tend to agree with that for the most part, but that's the common opinion.

Lots of folks get "synthy" sounds by combining envelope filters, octaves, and fuzzes. Some octaves and fuzzes sound pretty synthy by themselves.
