synth sounds with an envelope filter?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was looking for a good envelope filter to add to my pedalboard online. I found some guy who said you could put an octaver in front of this one envelope filter to get synth sounds. Does this actually work and is it limited to one brand of envelope filters?

I have an EHX Riddle. I picked it over the Enigma because I play keyboard and I try to buy pedals that will work up and down the board. Anyway, cranking the internal distortion trimpot and the sensitivity knob, and tweaking the other knobs at will, gives you some serious synth tones. Without the distortion and backing off the sens., it's an awesome envelope filter. I would figure the Enigma is every bit as good, and even better for bass. I never tried filter with octaver, but I've heard a lot of clips, and it can get quite synthy.

any nice filter with an suboctave before it sounds better than most "synth" pedals.

currently listening to a live recording where i did a lot of digitech whammy set to clean+ suboctave, into DOD FX25 (lime green)

sounds completely synthy. its not as adjustable as an actual synth, but the sounds you do get, are really nice i think.

The Digitech Bass Synth Wah does it for me.

Also, the Wooly Mammoth through the MicroPOG also sounds synthy.

This is frequently discussed, but it's a tricky one to do a useful search on...

I've recently got my little synthish thing all hooked up thusly:

Bass > MicroPOG > VTBass > EBS Bass IQ > chorus

with about a 40/60 sub/dry and a touch of high octave on the POG and just a smidge of distortion on the VT, I can get all kinda cool moogish sounds by tweaking my Bass IQ. Makes me want to get a few envelope filters so I can have different synth settings...

I had some issues with mine after 6 years of use. The switch went intermittent and some of the suboctave sounds began to sound wierd. Just got me another one of ebay to continue to get those sounds. A really useful, versatile pedal. Now if it only had a bank or two to store sounds.

I forgot to mention: The Enigma's Attack control can get nice and slow for some sweet synth sweeps, and the Enigma has an expression pedal input for even more control.
