synthy bass

hey, currently i dont own a chorus pedal, so i've been using a flanger set fairly subtly to get a chorus-y sound. (i hope you know what i mean, sounds similar to a chorus pedal but clearly different)

so my question is i think i was reading that to get a decent replica of the taurus sound to run a fuzz into octave followed by chorus.

i was wondering for a slight variation on that if you could substitute the chorus for a flanger. i would actually test it myself but its almost midnight and i live in an apartment. im sure my neighbours wouldnt appreciate being woken by the buildings floor (or roof for the folk below me) rumbling and vibrating.

cheers

You might be better off trying: octave > fuzz > envelope filter

Depending on which fuzz, which octave and which filter you can get somewhere in the ball park.

A flanger will give you bigger, more soupy-sounding movement but yeah it's worth a go.

OD > Filter > Flanger is a great synthy combination to my ears. To me chorus sounds really nice, but it's not as 'playable' or fun as a flanger or phaser, kinda squashes dynamics. I personally can't get an octave pedal working right with my technique.

Octave into fuzz will get better results in terms of tracking (and IMO tone) than fuzz into octave but yes, those two with a chorus give a 70's like synth sound.

Substituting OD for fuzz and adding a filter (either with the octaver or in lieu of) are other ways to tweak that tone as well.

Flanger can substitute for chorus yes. Turning down the regeneration gives a very chorus like effect in most cases anyway.

But for my money, the best effect for that Taurus type sound is a "Detune" like modes 4 and 10 (I think) on the Boss PS-3 or the shallow and deep detunes on the Whammy. VERY synthlike IMO.

There is a thread about that taurus tone just going on... I'm sure it is in the first 2 or 3 pages of this forum.

I do have a flanger for the purpose of a chorus, too. I see it like a chorus that can go over the top!

As a side note, EHX Bass Micro Synth (set properly) into chorus (or detune) is the simplest and most effective way to get the Taurus sounds IMO.

I use a bass micro into a Boss CH-1 chorus and it gets me really close. I have Taurus pedals so i know what i'm doing.
eq is important as well because the bass micro needs a little help in the bottom end department. i run the bass micro in a loop, I boost the input with a pre amp to get better tracking, then out an eq and chorus. people go on about the CE-2 being the best Boss chorus, it's good but it's no better than the CH-1.

It's been quite a while since I've had my XO BMS or even the full size, original BMS but Bill Ruppert from EHX started a thread a while back where he gave a link to different suggested settings for the BMS. There are two settings for Taurus sounds and they seem pretty right on from my own experimenting.

Here's the link. Give those settings a try.

Agree. On all points. Though the BMS into a chorus/detune without the benefit of a loop, preamp or EQ will get you fairly close to the Taurus sounds.
