hi ppl
been going through a fuzz quest recently to find a suitable partner for my moogerfooger mf101 , my once prized barker :assmaster (silicon) now sounds a little too `nasal` to my ears..
ive shortlisted the sfx micro fuzz (i ruled out the wooly mammoth coz of the price tag!! and the fact that i play an active bass) , seems like a great unit at the price!!
anyone have experiences with this pedal or indeed other recommendations?
much appreciated |

I went through a search for the same thing. A bassy, synthy fuzz that was gated and worked well with actives.
I ended up with a Chunk Brown Dog. I wish it had a tone knob (the fuzz is voiced a bit higher than I'd set i) but it works very well for me.
Another option is the Iron Ether Oxide. Very versatile and can do gated Wooly Mammoth like tones. It would also keep you from missing your Assmaster as it can do those tones as well. |

I think that for the purposes of feedign a LPF the Oxide wins out. Its ability to do gated mammoth sounds is fantastic before a LPF (I have it feeding the Iron Oxide Xerograph LPF and the two sound amazing together). On the other hand, I use the Micro Fuzz on my "normal" board because of the two fuzzes its the more bass preserving and simple to deal with. You don't need to tweak the Micro Fuzz, it just sounds flat out great out of the box (with actives) and its low end retention is the best I have heard.
I also heard a rumour that Max is teaking the Micro Fuzz to including a "mid boost" swtich to replace some of the mids that are naturally scooped out. That would help it sit well in a busy mix.
You can't go wrong with either, but for the pre-LPF position, I would think the Oxide might better suit your needs because of the gating.

I use it as a very gated fuzz mixed with an octave divider -- it sounds awesome with an LPF. And IMO it sounds better with an active bass than a passive. And it's under $200.
Check out John Davis's demo.

| | | | My fuzz of choice for this is the Mastotron. The Brown Dog and Oxide also sound like interesting choices, but from the clips I've heard, the Masto fits my needs even better.

I currently run a Moog Freqbox into my Moog LPF. Works really well. It's even better with an OC-2 feeding the Freqbox!

I run a Brown Dog into MF101 on my current board and it works well. That's not say I'm not looking for improvements... but I think the improvement could potentially come from a different filter. |

You might also look into the DE Ruiner - it's got some super deep heavy synthfuzz power. I don't have a Ruiner myself, but I've got something similar (also based on Devi's Dark Boost design, as is the Ruiner), and that thing is anything but nasally.
Another great feature of both the Ruiner and VFM is the price tag - you should be able to get either for less than $100. |
