Time for: Strange Hypothetical Question for the "Board that has Everything"

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok.....

So, I should have a TLSF coming pretty soon. There are 2 things it has that my board already does: EQ filter, and Blend.

I've listened to the 2 vids by grygrx (thank for the vids AND giving me GAS ), and I think the eq filter will be perfectly rendundasize (new word time?) my SCP, since I only use it for the slight treble roll off or whatever it is. Its days were numbered anyways, as soon as the Submarine DE was announced, but this just makes what it does less impactfull on the bass side board section that its on. [/ramble on] (EDIT: oh, and the texture filter on the Torn's Peaker works different than the TLSF or whatever the SCP does. Hence I haven't got rid of the SCP yet. Im more looking to use the SubDE as a second level of tone shaping.)

More major than the redundasizing of the SCP is the redundasizing of the VBjr. If the blend on the TLSF ends up being usful enough, there is a major part of the board rendundasized. MAJOR part. Its what makes that side special. Start out dry, engage some fuzz but still keep the dry and low freqs in there. Crazy times

This will leave my bass side lunchbox as: TLSF->TU-2. I'll basically have room for 2 MXRish sized boxes. One always on (due to the TLSF switch arrangement), and one I'd swith on/off. The one I'd switch on/off is pretty well set to be the SubDE, but I may place hold with a Boss EQ or something CHEAP just to get the extra tone shaping now, even if it isn't quite what the Sub does.

Since I shouldn't need more dirt on this board, and all my delay/modulation needs are handled (and tap tempo linked) on the GT-10B side of things, what the hell could I get for the lunchbox?

A couple of thoughts I've had are:

1) Reverb. RV-5. Owned one previously. Gated Verb. Industrial. Nuff said. I could run it after the TLSF and put it above the TLSF on the lunchbox. That would be my "always on" space filled. (EDIT2: as with the chorus, since the RV-5 is a Boss unit, I would prolly have no probs switching it on/off in gated mode, and i'd prolly just use it to verb up the fuzz anyways since I actually like the verbed fuzz sound I get on the GT side of the boards)

2) Octave Down. Micro POG or MXR BOD. I'm just putting this out for the sake of it, tho, since I really don't need an octave with my basses lowest note having a 27.5Hz value. I don't really think octave up would be useful, since the TLSF does that.

3) Chorus. On a more serious note, Chorus->TLSF? Maybe? I have the chorus's rate set up on the GT-10B to be always as slow as can be, and run into any of the 4 fuzzes phattens things up a little. Maybe like reverb, chorus could be useful on both sides of the equation? If I got a boss unit I could prolly turn it on/off with it sideways. I've done on other setups before.

I would definitely get an analog octave down. Dial out all of the dry signal and you'll have a MUCH different tone to modify with the rest of your effects. They'll all sound totally different.

I use a micro pog with my five string. I don't hang out on the b string with it but it sort of works for brief visits (of course I have a fEarful cab). It makes a nice synth/organ type sound and it's great with dirt.

Just to add to the chaos.

1) I don't think the EQ filter will be doing exactly what you think. Maybe it will and I just don't understand what you are saying. I've always struggled to convey exactly how the TLSF works, but I will try again.

-Each side has it's own volume.

-The Fuzz (Gain) knob is global, you can't make one side subtle and the other side crazy.

-The blend knob is global and passively blends in clean signal (more cleans = louder), this makes it a bit troublesome to achieve unity gain at higher clean blend levels.

-The timber knob is global, does very little, but can be used to 'tune in' a specific instrument to get more or less of the octave sound/reduce static.

-The left side has a knob (filter) that will scoop the mids of that side only. This knob is what creates a distinct sound for each side. If you turn the filter off, both sides sound the same. The expression input controls the exact frequency of that mid scoop and really only works if the filter is cranked. Can be used to produce a bit of a wah wah sound.

- The knobs turned out to be a poor choice and are a little fragile, the colored caps like to pop off, but can be fixed with a dab of glue. I'm currently looking for some cool knobs to replace mine.

Daniel,

Please, please, please, the first time you refer to a pedal in your thread use the full name. I only figured out what it was is because grygrx responded so thoroughly about the pedal which led me to think of fuzzes.

I don't know if I sound like a jackass now, but I was kind of interested in the thread and frustrated that I didn't know what the heck you were talking about.

Just to be sure, we are talking about the Tentacle Love Super Fuzz right?

Thanks.

Also, how much board space will you have? Are you going to build a legit board any time soon and mount everything? That will definitely play a major role in what you wind up getting.

This thread reads like an eBay ad.
