Tips for a pedal in 3 piece band

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

My whole bass playing life has been in one band where we have two guitarists, but i am now going to be jamming in a 3 piece with just one guitar and one bass. I was just wondering what pedals i could get to thicken up the sound of the rythym section in verses, or when the guitar solo's etc.

I know the dynamics of songs will change but i want to keep the thickness of the sound to an extent. Thanks so much for your time

SansAmp Programable BDDI. This will let you dial up 4 sounds (including bypass). They are not cheap ($200+) but well worth it.

I already have a sansamp but it's not a programable one, but i only use it for an overdrive pedal. Is that what you are trying to suggest?

In a 3 piece setting I find myself using synth pedals more than anything else. Right now I'm in a four piece where I do all the lead vocals, and the keyboard player just plays piano and organ parts, maybe a horn punch or two, and I have an expansive pedal board, but I find myself stomping on my Boss SYB-3 and Digitech Bass Synth Wah the most. This band is basically like being in a three-piece because there is no "synth" player but me. In other 3 piece bands they always loved the synths too. The Digitech is an exceptionally good buy-- like 80 bucks for tons of good synth sounds, a couple envelopes, and an octaver all in one well-built pedal.

I have seen a few bassists in 3-piece bands run a chorus. They just velcro it to the back of the cab and run it all the time ... not much effect, just a little to thicken it up. From what I have heard in these bands, it seems to work very well.

I also play in a 3 piece and have been thinking about getting either an EHX HOG/POG/MicroPog, Digitech Bass Synth Wah / Triad / Whammy that would let me send an octave up +5th to a separate guitar amp for filling choruses and so on. Still doing my research on all the options and waitingfor the new Triad to be released before laying any cash down though.

The poster of this thread did it with a MicroPOG, but blended the signal with a blender so only one amp was required: "Rhythm guitar" with Micro POG and one rig?

Something like a sansamp to dial in some grit. I'm in a 3 piece as well, I have a gritty channel on all the time. Got a dist for playing leads, and a fuzz for when the guitar solos or needs a double to heavy things up. I really feel I should get a chorus pedal though, so I'd suggest that. Idk about running it all the time but if you want to, do it.

I love 3 piece bands, I feel they really open up a lot more places for the bass to be creative with effects and be positive to the song. Makes the music more interesting, grabs peoples attention more.

Boss Bass Chorus. Simple, works, and easy to find.

BTW, werks, anyone tell you your avatar looks like Snow Job from G.I. Joe?

Ok, they seem reasonably cheap. How do i set it up if i just waant a thicker sound but still keeps the punch?

Ok, so i went out and tried a couple of pedals today, the main ones i was comparing was the boss ceb-3, and the ce-5.

I ended up buying the ce-5 which is made for guitars but sounded so much better. I hope i made the right choice lol. Thanks heaps guys

I A/B'ed them too, and also bought the CE-5, seemed like you could dial in a thicker chorus effect than the ceb-3. Only you know what the right choice is, trust your ears.

Thanks mate. Yeah i found the ceb-3 to sterile and the effect was only minor. The ce-5 is quite versatile to my ears which is quite awesome. I will take a photo of my pedal board and post it soon.
