Toadworks Barracuda Flanger - Pics & Soundclip

Sign in to disble this ad
So I guess I might be the first on the FX forum to pick one of these up.

The soundclip is not me playing, it was recorded by Ryan at Toadworks for me last night after I emailed him and said a lot of bass players were curious about it.

Just my luck, he told me pedalgeek was getting a shipment in today so I took a ride over and picked one up. So far I'm very impressed.

Sounds like a Maxon FL-9. Too subtle for me, but thanks for the clips! ;D

When I get a chance, I will record some clips myself. It actually can get very metallic, I just think the regen wasn't cranked in those clips.

One man's "subtle" is another man's "warm". I like that it doesn't have the metallic tinge that most flangers do.

A strange term to describe a flanger, but it has an organic quality to it. The only other flanger I've said that about is the George Dennis Chorus Flanger. But they have distinctly different voices.

I'm not really a flanger guy but this sounds good to me.

I just returned my George Dennis (I loved it) but the Barracuda "gets it" a little more. The added option of the expression pedal is probably what did it for me.

And I'm right along with you, I love flange but I hate the metallic tone.

True, just a matter of taste.

Sweet. Now get some of yer own damn clips up.

That sample is pretty subtle, but it sounds good. If I didn't just blow a wad of cash on an Angler and get scolded by my old lady, I would have purchased one of these by now. Damn you, failing world economy! I always hated my job but being able to lob huge stacks of money for new music equipment I don't really need was worth the cost of selling my soul. Alas!

Anywho, I'd love to hear how this flanger compares to the Hartman.

I do like the GD as a chorus too though. I keep meaning to sell it, but chorus after fuzz & filter can just sound so ominous. Like this. Plus sometimes I get in a mood where I want a flanger.

Can you get a chorus sound out of the Barracuda? If so, maybe you could record a clip or two?

Very cool sound there. Yes, I've been meaning to record a LOT of clips just haven't found the time. I will gladly record some next time I hit the studio.

Thanks for sharing; Ryan's clips sound great. Street price is up there though on those.

Indeed. The construction of the pedal is top notch though, quality throughout.

excane - is that a custom graphic on yer goat? Looks very sinister. And how do you like the retro-sonic phaser?

2nd that... but it's expensive to build. The circuit board is PACKED...

I like the way that sounds. If I felt I needed a flanger, I'd probably go for the Barracuda.

I made the custom satanic goat decal and laminated it on there myself at work.

The retro-sonic is damn near perfection, for me anyway. I still love my HBE Psilocybe but I wanted something different for my new board. If you like the sound of an MXR script based phaser, definitely check it out. The level control is what I really needed because the Psilocybe has a slight drop in volume (well mine does anyway)

I have tried the Maxon, and was considering it for my board. I think they fall in the same category...they can both be pretty subtle but as far as I remember (it was a while ago) the Maxon didn't really get too "metallic" (which is fine by me, and too subtle for others)

For Bass though, my old reliable favorite is the old DOD bass flanger. It's super thick without being too metallic if you go easy on the regen knob. The bypass could be a lot better for a nonTB pedal, but I still love the sound.

The more I play with the Barracuda, it can get VERY metallic as I'm playing my guitar through it.
