Tom Petterson's Effects?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys! I've been listening to a lot of Cheap Trick lately, and I have been trying to figure out what Tom uses on songs like Sick Man of Europe off their newest album. It sounds like some sort of distortion, but its so...crunchy. Haha. Thanks for the help!

Mostly, its the amps that he uses. Hes got Reeves guitar heads and splits his signal, one distorted, one clean. Most of his distortion I believe comes from that

Read about his gear in a Bass Player Tone & Technology article recently:

Basses: Waterstone, Gibson Thunderbird, Fender P, Hofners

Amps: Hiwatts and Reeves

Effects: Radial JB-7 Splitter, SansAmp Bass Driver DI.

Kromwarp is right, he does generate most of the distortion with the amps: the article mentions he uses 3 amps: one really distorted, one not so distorted and one for the low end..

Hope this helps.

Yep! Thanks to both of you guys for the help! My question is, is there a way I can get remotely close to his tone without running more than one amp?

Just went and listened to it on the tooobe.... Tone is influenced by bass & amp, but as best as I can tell, just by turning the SansAmp gain near its max and playing with a pick should get you near that tone.... I don't hear another effect on this.

Lots of cranked tube amps and 12 strings. Simple physics, like gravity.

+1. That tone is the real deal, not an effect. But... you must add the talent factor in, a lot of his signature tone is in his hands.

Haha, I figured that I would not get his EXACT tone. But using the SansAmp should work?

Since the man uses it, I guess you'll get close. As mentionned by Emblymouse, TP is well known for his use of 8 and 12 string basses, so that's got to be a huge part of his sound.

You might try a Boss Bass OD. They can be adjusted so the low end doesn't get distorted, so I think you would get a similar sound with clean low end and distorted high end. I use one and like it.

Very cool, thanks! I have the guitar version of the Big Muff, and I've heard before on here that it takes away too much of the bass, but I didn't really see it. So I was also just debating on using that and seeing if I could make that work too.
