Question This tone is awesome!

Sign in to disble this ad
The attached clip is a from a southern gospel artist. His name is Jimmy Hicks and the title of the song is "move."

I want to know # 1 what equipment is used to get this tone (A Fender Jazz perhaps?) and # 2 how is that tone/sound produced at the 19 sec mark. Is that a chord?? or is that some type of effect?

Your best guess would be appreciated.

thanks

You could probably get that tone with a Jazz, but it sounds more modern/hi-fi to me.

There's no effect used. It sounds like he's sliding up and then playing a double stop.

Hmm...couldn't tell you the exact bass...

And at 19 seconds it sounds like he's playing a chord, or at least plucking the 2 notes of a chord one right after another and letting them ring. Well actually on another listen is sounds sort of like he goes from root to whichever interval and back to root quickly.

It's a 7th with a major 3rd on the string below it.

the thing at the :19 mark is a slide into a diminished double stop.

keyTeop: I'm not hearing a 7th in there at all

I'm not sure what key he's in (almost sounds like Bb), but slide into the upper register to the #2 then he hits the 6th, then he holds the sith and hits the #2 and holds them together to create the diminished double stop.

as far as the tone it sounds like a Jazz Bass with the High Mids bumped, low mids cut a bit, and the bass and trebble boosted a bit.

Well, technically a major 3rd and minor 7th played without the root IS a diminished double stop.

I think I've seen some of your work on www.learngospelbass.com and youtube. Does any of your videos illustrate the diminished double stop? I'm having a hard time visualizing what you are saying.

And sliding into the # 2 and the 6th? what does all that mean?

OK... This and the ensuing discussion confused me so I picked up a bass and had another listen. Underneath what's going on at 0:19 there's an A chord, and he slides up, hits the G at the 12th fret and the C# at the 11th on the string below. To me that's a minor 7 and a major 3rd. Given that the chord is A.

So I think I had it right, but I'm happy to be corrected by people who, like, understand stuff properly. I heard it as a dominant 7 chord and it still seems to me that that's what he's doing.
